My almost-6-month old puppy Molly (Westie) loves to play FETCH. She has been good at it since she was about 12 weeks old. I try to use our fetch time to teach her the DROP IT command, but I would like some pointers. When she brings back the toy, I usually grab it, while still in her mouth. The trainer at school said that a LIGHT, brief tugging game would be a good reward for them, for bringing the toy back. So we do that, then I say DROP IT, but she continues to want to tug. If I let go, she comes closer, so I'll keep playing. Should I use a treat to distract her? I've tried that, but then she becomes fixated on the treats, and won't fetch anymore. I'm also starting to wonder if she thinks "drop it" means "let's play tug of war"!! Any tips? What are we not doing right? She does eventually let go of the thing, but I think it's more fluke than anything. Until now she has not chewed on anything of mine, but this week she has developed an interest in my shoes, and I think this would be a good time to put the DROP IT command to good use! Thanks!
Did you mean "leave it " ? I saw some great video's on you tube that would help you I am sure. How to teach 'leave it'- without intimidation I found this one very good and well explained. Hope this helps.
The best thing to do, for "DROP IT", is when she brings the toy back trade her the toy for a small treat. As she drops the toy to have the treat, say drop it. She will get the idea. It works great. As you give her the treat, pick up the toy and play again. soon she will be dropping the toy at your feet every time. Good luck
Zomo, do you have a link for that video? I actually meant "drop it", as in dropping a toy out of her mouth, or any other object that she may have picked up (kleenex for example! she gets a hold of one by mistake every now and then, and she clamps down on them... she has a love for all paper things, for some reason!), but we are also working on "leave it", and could use any tips on that. But I will try the other advice to exchange toys for treats when we're playing fetch. I think maybe what I need to do is catch her when she does it voluntarily (or when coaxed, if i use a lure), and reinforce it. Right now I think she doesn't understand what she should do when I say DROP IT. She kind of looks at me like saying "huh?"
Sorry but I am a little puter challenged I thought I posted a link but I guess not. So the best I can do for you is you tube.com and the title is in my first post. It should be right because I copied it. I'm learnin
