Does anyone else have this problem! Every time I take my Yorkie 19 llbs outside he will scratch at the grass, more like digging into the grass with his paws. My lawn looks horrible. Big chunks of grass are missing and every time he does it more flings here and there. He does this all the time not just when he is finished going potty. How can I train him not to destroy my lawn.? HELP.........

Dogs have sweat gland in their pads, when they go to the bathroom or sometimes just because, they will scrap their paws along the ground to mark the area. If you pay attention, it tends to be in a straight line, like a pathway to his Poop or pee, it supposed to catch the nose of another dog and lure it into the poop or pee. Sue
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
Sue Thats why I love this site, never too old to learn!!!! Have had dogs all my life never ever knew why they "scratched" after a Poop. Not a pee just poop. Just thought it was inherent to dogs. Kind of like turning in a circle sometimes, which I think may come from when they were wild and turned in a circle to mat the grass down so they could lay on it. (might be all wrong on that but that is what I think).
