21 weeks old, one pup is fine, one is sick with watery stools, smells horid and he isnt eating or drinking, gave worm x thursday night. seemed fine and playful friday morning. came home from work with chicken nuggets their favorite and he didnt want any. i knew some thing wrong. he isnt playful, just laying around and not interested in anything or anyone. does pick up head if you call his name but lays it back down. i made him burger and rice and not interested, doesnt want treats, wont drink water, hes had water poop last night and this morning, pure liquid no worms but smells like death, very heathy and playful before this dewormer. when should i contact vet for advice? i mean im going to call but does dewormer do this to some pups? my other dogs never got this way when dewormed. im worried . how do i know if this is serouis? how much time do i let pass before i get him to vet? I always over react and rush my dogs to vet for the smallest things and leave owing 150 for nothing basically. so im trying to advoid if not emergecy of coarse they will tell me bring him in, banfeild is greedy. will it just run its coarse? should i give pepto? didnt want to try to give pepto if it would harm him. never been sick before and never ever has he turned away food, hes a food hound and will steal everyone elese food. i am sorry to post here i this category but i really need some insight on what i need to to..
forgot to mention this is the first time weve dewormed on our own, weve had the vet do all deworming and shots, but was told we could do it ourselfs. but my dogs never got sick before for deworming. isnt much on line at all about puppy sick after deworming ive been on all morning since 6am and cant find much of anything
Depending on the wormer used, it is very easily to over medicate the animal.. in turn causing organ failure. A friend of mines vet killed her dachshund using ivermectin. (sp?).
Also remember that diarrhea in a puppy is very deadly, it can happen in a matter of hours. The "horrid" smelling part worries me, as well as the 'watery stools'. Alot of times that is a sign of parvo. I would get this puppy to a vet, even if paying an emergency charge.
I have the same problem with my girl Scottie , I have one boy and one girl .
After picking scottie poop through the transparent plastic bag I can see flat white rice grain size dead tapeworms in the girls poop . The boys poop did not have any visible worms .
A day ago I gave her PetCo brand anti-diarrhea medicine mixed in boiled white rice and plain yogurt . The anti-diarrhea medicine ( pink liquid similar to our pepto bismol ) helped tremendously with the upset stomach and the poop became more solid but the worms are still there . She started hydrating herself and drinking water herself now .
After she recovered this much , I have given them both a dose of over the counter deworming chewable tablet 30mg medicine for tape , round and hookworms in proportion to their weight based on the directions on the box . I also gave them a biscuit each .
They are jumping around and happy so I will now watch the poop .
In 2 weeks I will ask the vet to give them Distemper , Bordetella , Heartworm , Corona , Deworming , Hepatitis (Adenovirus type 2), Parainfluenza, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis vaccines . I will take their 20 minute old poop sample and the over the counter deworming chewable tablet 30mg medicine carton I gave them for the vets review .
I will be careful in giving them 9 vaccines all together , it may affect their liver but they are 1 year old . At 2 years they are fully grown .
I did some research and it seems they picked this up from tasting other animal poop . I caught the girl eating what looks like squirrel poop ( little black round balls ) when I took her to a dog park . I pull her away but she manages to grab one or two
The dogs have received rabbies vaccinations for the year .
