Last night I took my Chow Chow for a walk in the local park. We have been going for a few weeks now. I know some people are biased towards various breeds for various reasons. I understand if they've been attacked by a certain breed as a child or whatever, that fear is going to stay. But, are people really afraid of Chows? My first puppy solicization class was led by a vet tech., she said she thought Cincinnati, OH should ban Chows, before Pit Bulls. (I should have walked out then) Anyway, last night, a man walking two large but friendly Labs went out of his way to avoid crossing paths with my dog. Then, later a couple actually crossed the street to avoid their dog and my dog meeting. Their dog was pulling like crazy, and seemed friendly. My dog was not pulling like thiers, not barking or acting unfriendly in any way. I want to socialize him even more, but I'm having a hard time understanding why people react differently to Chows? Any thoughts?

It may not have anything to do with the Chows. Maybe they are worried about their own dogs. You'll never know unless you ask.

In the area where I live there are alot of people who own Chow Chows or Pit Bull Terriers. There are so many stories on the TV or in the newapaper about attacks by one of these two breeds on either a person or another dog that a lot of people are afraid of them. My vet and his staff have suffered several attacks by one of these dogs. I don't know if the problem is because we have people who don't train their dogs properly or if this is caused by breeding dogs that have bad temperaments . For many years I worked for the local water department and went door to door reading water meters, and of the few times I had a problem with an agressive dog ony one time was the dog one of these breeds. I personally have never owned either breed , although my parents, sister and brother-in-law have owned /or bred Chow Chows.I have always favored the large/giant very mellow breeds.like Mastiffs and Bullmastiffs.

Being from Ohio, there is a huge population that apparently hates Pit Bulls, for no good reason in my opinion. I agree that bad breeding habits, and irresponsible people give certain breeds a bad rap. I want to show people that these dogs can be great companions, but am sensitive to fea that they may have. I wanted to adopt a pit bull puppy, but my husband wouldn't let me. The dog was scarred, he was concerned what had been done to it, couldn't be undone. But one of his friends had a Pit Bull when they were first out of high school, he said it was the best dog. So even he understands all dogs can be good, people can make them do bad things. I wish I could get close enough to these people to see what their problem is! Maybe then I'll get it. I'll just keep getting out there in public with him. We are going on a hike this weekend that is open to the public and a local university!

My suggestion to you is to join a breed specific forum. Having a group of people who share your love and understanding of the breed can really be helpful. Just so you know I adore Chows; they look like living teddybears to me.

Yes they are, Pippin, my old chow, gets the same reaction when her owners walk her, she takes her to her childs bus stop everyday just too see peoples reaction, LMAO.

It must depend upon where you live. I had a Chow for years and when I got him, I was told to keep him familiar with people, so I walked him alot in public areas. People would stop me on the street almost everytime we walked and ask me about my dog. I had offers to buy his puppies which was a hoot because he was a neutered male!

I live in Michigan, by the way.

I'll admit chows are the only breed that scares me. I love pitties and have never thought twice about them but I have had run ins with so many chows that give no warning and just bite.

But like with pitties just make sure your dog is behaved and go on with life. Use your dog as a good example of the breed.

I know I've been walking my dobe and gotten far out of the way when a chow goes by and I get funny looks!

I am scard to death of chows, and chow mixes. As a groomer, I refuse to do them anymore. I had groomed a chow mix one time, and If I had not put a muzzel on him he would have taken my throut(sp?), I have been bitten or had to muzzel every chow I have groomed.

I love pits, and have never been scard of them. I will not refuse any other breed. Personally, I would cross the street not to walk near yours either. I wish I could say it was just one, but unfortunatly I tried many. I have met one nice chow (my boss did her) in 13yrs of grooming.

Chows are one of those breeds with a history of biting people without an obvious reason for the attack.

I don't think it's so much that chows bite with out warning , but rather that they don't give the typical warning. I've heard the same thing about Rotties. Rotties in general use body languageas opposed to vocalization. Harley rarely barks and has never growled, instead he tenses every muscle in his body. Not all dogs growl, bark or bear their teeth. I also agree that animals in general sense fear and apphrehension, even when we think we're hiding our feelings.

I agree with almost everything you are all saying. Chows are certainly different than other breeds. To me, they are almost like a cat, in that they can take or leave you if the mood strikes them. And yes, they can bite with no warning, it happened to me, with my own dog. There are lots of people here that just love him as well, and want to pet him, and kids of course think he's a teddy bear. He is very gentle, but I'm very gaurded with him when I allow people to pet him, I would be horrified if he actually hurt someone. But this guy is very social, loves everything and everyone. I intend to keep him out in the public so people can know Chows can be good dogs. But I also know there are bad people that train their Chows to be overly protective. People say oh look at the big doggie! But I think, wait he's not that big! He's all hair! To me a big dog is a mastiff or rottie, which I would love to have. That would be a site, me walking a Chow and a Rottie together! Wait, let me give you the mental picture, I'm 5'4" and about 120 pounds! They would outweigh me and maybe be taller if you added there length.

I also walked my sisters puppy, just turned a year old...recently given to them with zero leash manners.

It all has to do with confidence and the ability to read body language, which is really common sense/courtesy as it extends to most all languages and species.

If people are behaving this way, these are not the people(or their dogs) with whom your dog should be hanging out with.
I've only gotten nervous a couple of times just happened to be a pitbull , which is not a dog for an inexperienced owner and this guy didn't have control of his dog and the chi across the street is ALLOWED to go in and out of his yard at will. The bigger dog perked up and literally pulled the person walking him to the tiny yapping escapee, I pulled my hose out and chased him until he squeezed back into his yard.

I was so angry with both careless owners in the situation, I am surprised my head did not explode.

Even many breeders of Chow Chows do not realize that most of these dogs do not have periferal vision so when a hand suddenly appears from "nowhere" it can trigger a defensive attack. Also this is a breed that was not intended as a companion animal in its country of origin so temperament and socialability were not high priorties in the foundation of the breed. There is much effort being made by good breeders in the USA and other countries to improve the over quality of the temperaments of the breed. In the past fanciers of other breeds have done the same thing to preserve a breed and make it more acceptable to the general public{ Great Danes,Bullmastiffs, Mastiffs,Rottweilers}.Using common sense and polite manners when aproaching a strange dog can prevent a lot of bad experiences, but ultimately it is the owners responsiblity to know their dog's tolerance level and to control its behavior.

I'm afraid of chow's. When I was a kid, my neighbor had one and it was mean. That's the only experience I have with older chow's - as i've only been around a few pups since i've been older.
Love your pets. Have them spayed or neutered.
