Throughout all of the time I have had my dogs, we have always fed them table scraps and plain store bought dogfood. While they seem happy with this I have ran into many problems because of it . Come to find out the table scrap theory is unethical if you want to train your dogs to do tricks. I just recently taught my dogs to sit . They are hapilly eating Iams dogfood now.
Can you please clarify what you mean by it being 'unethical' to feed your dog table scraps in order to teach them tricks? Do you mean it doesn't work or it teaches them bad habits? IMO, table scraps are given the bad rap....as long as you don't take them directly from your plate on the table and that you give them good food that they can eat, I don't see a problem. The problem that has given table scraps a bad rap is that they can cause an imbalance of nutrients if the dog owner isn't careful.
ANyway, I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Sorry, maybe I'm just having an off day...
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
I don't no what your trying to say either, do you mean your teaching your dog obediance with scraps which it will get use to and might not preform the tricks without them scraps are good as long as you feed them to the dog at its meal time
Well, I must say I'm confused as well. Table scraps are perfectly ok. (OK, I'll confess...my Harley sits at my feet during meal times and I do slip him some of my dinner )but I never use scraps for training purposes. I use them as more of a special treat. While I clean the kitchen, my dogs line up and watch my every move in hopes that I will drop something on the floor...and soon! But I always give a command when I give the scraps.
May I also suggest that you try another brand of food. Iams is not the worst but certainly not one of the best. Try some of the better brands and you may also see a difference. I personally use Nutro Ultra and raw but Innova and Blue Buffalo are also among high rated. Anything you can buy at Wal-Mart or the grocery store is usually full of fillers and by-products.
Best of luck and sorry I couldn't help more!
