We just bought ourselves the sweetest little puppy. His Mom is a pug and his Dad is a black lab. This was a chance meeting, when the pug got out and went cruising the streets. Little did we know that people actually breed these two animals to create the new Pug adore. Our little guy will be fixed as soon as he is old enough and so is the Mom pug. We are so happy with our little Cooper. The vet said that he's a great mix. I'm posting this because I have read so much on this dog online, just wanted to share. How can I post a picture?
Wow! Now I have heard everything. A pug and a lab? And the father is the lab no less....I am speechless. I would definitely love to see pictures. You can open an account on a photo sharing site like photobucket and upload your pictures there. Once you have done that, you can copy and paste the direct link to the photo. Easy as that!
I'm sure Cooper is a sweet little puppy...aren't they all? It doesn't surprise me that people would intentionally mix these two breeds (so what if the mother needs a c-section or dies during whelping) since it makes such a cute "designer" name. But for a vet to say this is a good mix borders on malpractice in my opinion. I would be looking for a different vet!
It's great that you love your little guy, but I agree with the previous posts. That poor pug is lucky to be alive! Not only should she have been fixed, but she should have been out roaming where a dog that big could get to her.
I would LOVE to see a picture of your puppy. 3 months ago I bought what I was told was a Pug and Black Lab puppy. My husband and I are now thinking he may not be because he is very small, he weighs around 10 pounds, and is 5 months old, and has some long hairs around his mouth. Sometimes I look at him and wonder if he isn't some kind of terrier mixed with pug. His mother was the Pug so of that breed I am sure. Please post pictures if you can. Thanks. Jenn
well not to say it isnt odd but she is a great dog. Her mom (the pug) only had three puppies with her dad(choc lab) and all three were very cute...people ask me all the time where I got her...which she was given to me by a friend...If i ever got another dog I would love another mix like this...I dont know if its a "designer" breed or not but she is a smart cute dog...end of story!!
When two different breeds are intentionally bred, it is a 'designer' breed. 'Designer breed' is just another name for mixed breed but made to seem more sophisticated, thanks to the likes of Paris Hilton. People are mixing breeds because people want a dog to look a certain way without considering... anything. There's no purpose to mixing two different breeds other than making money.
Qualifier: there are breeders of purebreds that unscrupulously breed for money - these breeders do not test their breeding dogs for health issues nor do they consider the breed's standard.
So this pug a dore is a 'designer breed'; though not a breed in itself, just a mix to two breeds. I would be interested to see how this dog fares later in life. Possibly end up with the same structural problems as today's English Bulldog (the old English Bulldog was crossed with a pug to make it shorter and smaller and thus, it cannot whelp normally and must have C-sections to give birth along with the breathing problems).
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
Actually a pug mom would not be dead from breeding to a lab. Yes there is a high possiability there could be problems whelping. But also coming from a livestock breeding background as well as dogs. You can actually breed a smaller animal to a larger one, and nature just sort of adjusts. I have known first hand of many a pony mare who was bred to a full sized horse stallion and foaled with no issues and the foal was small like the mother. But grew to be much larger. You know what they say, God looks out for fools and idiots. Designer dog, mixed breed, mutt, mongrel a rose by any other name......................

I dont know about "scrapmom's" dissapearing act but I know my dog came from a female sandy colored pug and the male was a chocolate lab...it was an unintentional mating when my friend's boyfriend's lab got out and got to her pug who had just gone into her first heat...and long story short she had three all were fine and the pug has gone on to live a happy life....
