My daughter brought home a toy poodle yesterday and picked up a bag of adult dog food for smaller breeds. What would be the best kind of food for this 11 week old pup and how long should it be eating puppy food? Thanks in advance for your help!
Pen2 is right. Puppies need a higher protein food. Puppy mixes balance ingredients to meet the specific nutritional needs of very young dogs. Depending on how they manage and grow I think they are on it for close to a year.
Many foods have all stages foods. The place where I get my dog food from only sells one or two puppy foods for those people who insist on feeding a puppy food, or for the few dogs who need a puppy formula for some other reason. In other words, puppy formula is just a reason to up the price on their food. My dogs are both on Natural Balance allergy formula small bites, to which I add stuff. They both do very well on it (they are 6 months and 3 years).
Even if you are on the right track, you will still get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers)
Thanks for your replies. I was just concerned because she had mistakenly picked up adult dog food instead of puppy food. Since that time she has taken him to another vet who gave her some high protein puppy food. I never thought that I would be a "poodle person" but this little guy is SO intelligent. A quick learner. In two weeks he's had only three accidents in the house, because we weren't quick enough to recognize the sign he was giving us. My Scotty dog was much harder to housebreak. Thank you all once again.
