I am a new proud owner of a JR pup that was born a week ago. His mother is a JR with a rough coat and his dad is half JR half Fox Terrier with a smooth coat. The woman I got him from says he will have a smooth coat. Is it possible for her to know already?
First off, the puppy is still with it's mother right? Im not a breeder but have had numerous dogs my entire life. I do know the breeder I got my Jack from wouldn't allow puppies to go to their new homes until they were atleast 6weeks old. Second, is the person you got your puppy from a true breeder of Jack Russells? From the way you write it doesn't sound like the lady is a true bredder. All Jack puppies have the "smooth" coat up until atleast 6wks to 8wks. In most Jacks that I have saw it's usually 2 to 3 months after birth you'll notice the difference. However, the texture and softness of the hair might possibly help. If it is smooth the coat will be thick and dense, and shouldn't feel silky like. A rough coat will look wiry and rough coat Jacks usually require more grooming than other coat styles. The last one is broken coat with a mix of smooth and rough coats. If there is longer hair on the jaw most likely will have rough or broken coat. If it is broken or rough be sure the coat doesn't get wooly.
If the pups are just a week old, and she is telling you what kind of coat the do is going to have, she is an idiot. Not even people who show Jacks perfessionally can tell you that until they are 6months to a year old. That puppy has a 50/50 chance of either coat, and it could become a combination of both called a broken coat. Personally I would get my money back and go somewhere else. This person doesn't sound that they have a clue.
