Hi, my 13 year old akita mix has a tumor coming from her spleen. they did an ultrasound yesterday and dr confirmed it was from the spleen and said all of her other organs are fine and didn't see any other growths, also said the tumor was not bleeding at this time, but can at any time. her chest xrays were fine too. He still for some reason did not give me a direct answer as to wheather this tumor is cancerous. I am just really confused beause if it is cancer i would not put my 13 year old pearl throught surgery to remove spleen and this tumor, her quality of life would be much more important to me. but if it is not cancer we would be saving her life by removing it, so she won't bleed to death. Does anyone have any experience with this and know if there is realyy a way to know if this mass is cancer before puting her through surgery? she also has blood work all came out fine except albumin is low. also, does anyone know how well an older dog would do with this surgery?
I'm sorry to hear about your dear old dog. I had a Rottweiler with cancer of the spleen. The bloodwork should indicate cancer. I would take her to a specialist, and ask what her chances are to remove the tumor and the spleen, because that can be done.I would also ask the specialist what the chances of the spleen rupturing are because of this tumor, and not having the surgery. If there is no sign of cancer anywhere, then I'd go ahead and try and remove it. I hope everything turns out well, and that you get a positive answer from the specialist.
