We have started making our own food for our two dogs after a recent scare with our 13 y/o shepard mix. Could anyone help us with fruit, vegetable, and protein choices as well as serving size of these. thanks
Homemade dog food can be tricky because you have to give the right proportion of nutrients. However, good for you for taking the opportunity to feed your dogs better food!
One important thing to remember is to keep the calcium;phosphorus ratio in check. Keep it at 1:1 or 1:2 at the most. Calcium can be provided through raw bones or bonemeal. You can ask a butcher to grind bones for you and then add to the food. Or you can crush raw egg shells finely and put them in the food.
Right now, I'm feeding my dog semi-homemade food. I buy a mix that has organic barley, rosemary, garlic and other organic ingredients. To this I add meat (turkey, chicken, beef, lamb), oil (sunflower or preferably safflower), a red apple, 2 eggs, a green vegetable (like zucchini, broccoli(if your dog can tolerate it) or green beans), an orange veggie (sweet potato, butternut squash, carrot), and blueberries or raspberries. The mix is called Canine Life. Then I bake it into muffins or loaves. I like it because I can use different meats and veggies every batch. I also give my dog a raw bone or a raw chicken wing and sometimes add raw organ meats or muscle meats. There are also some slow cooker recipes out there. Just google them and you should find some good ones.
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
Dogs may eat any vegetable they want, but cats should not have any starchy veggies, like peas and corn. Some dogs and cats even enjoy fruits!
It's a good idea to always add a grain, such as Kibble, wheat germ, cooked oatmeal or whole wheat bread to meat dinners. For dogs use 75% carbohydrate foods (grains and vegetables) to 25% meat; for cats use half carbohydrate foods to half meat.
