hi i have recently gotten a 7 week old basset hound and he is quite aggressive, for example last night he was trying to chew on a cord so i told him no firmly and removed him from the cord and he started growling and barking i told him No again and he bit my hand. i realize he is just a puppy but how do i curb this thanks shannon
When I have had puppies in the past, I disiplined them from biting by holding their tongue when my hand was in their mouth when they bit me. It doesn't hurt them, but it freaks them out. Also, you need to make sure that when they bite you, you make it 100% clear that your are the boss. Flip the puppy on to it's back and tell it "no" firmly every time.
To protect an asset is a normal dog behavior, 7 weeks is not to young to start showing aggression for assets(cord). Start off by offering something better, in exchange, like a kong filled with something, praise the puppy for showing interest in the kong. Never just take away, or hold their mouth closed or use any type of punishment. This a natural behavior, useing punishment will cause the the dog to guard it more. Sue
