Recently my 1 year old jack russell/beagle mix has started growling at my husband. He walks her every morning and recently when he comes to get her off our bed for a walk she growls and snaps at him. The other day she was laying on the couch next to me and he went to pat her and she did the same thing. We both told her no but I am nervous and do not want this behavior to continue. I spend all day with her and she may be protective or guarding me but I do not want this to go on. It just started out of the blue, she loves my husband and runs to him when he gets home but this behavior is unexceptable. Has anyone had to deal with this? Any advice would be welcome.
Your dog is showing dominance over your husband. When you wake up in the morning, take her off the bed, and tell her it's time to go for a walk. When your husband comes home, and she's sitting beside you, take her off the couch, and go and greet your husband. Make sure that you let her know what the chain of command is. It's not her, followed by you and your husband, it's you and your husband, equally, followed by her. She may well be closer to you because you're home with her all day, but she has to respect your husband, and show no aggression. I suggest you read up on the N.I.L.F. training program ( nothing in life is free) it may be a good resource for you. Good luck with her, she's young, but you will have to do a bit of work to change her ways.
