Hi, I have a 2 year old shih tzu who only as recently as about 2 months has developed two new problems. The first one is sporadically lashing out on our 2 year old cat whom he normally gets along with, but lately he just starts barking and lurching towards her very aggressively and his bark is much angrier than his regular bark. The only way to really stop him is when we yell at him to stop. I'm afraid of what could happen if we aren't in the room though!
The 2nd issue is after our walks lately he will stop about 10 feet from the door and not move until we either literally drag him in the door or we pick him up.
Does anyone have any advice on how to stop him from both lashing out on my cat and also to obey me and "come" when I tell him to? He used to be so good at this!
If you are sure he is being aggressive twords the cat and not playing you will want to keep them apart when you cant suppervise. Something may have happend between the two, perhaps one day when you weren't watching the cat attacked. When your dog starts acting aggressive twords the cat, do NOT yell at him! This negitivly reinforces that behavior, instead, distract him with something fun (a tug toy for instance)and when he give his attention to the toy play with him with the toy or praise with a food reward like cheese. Make sure to praise first, then hand over the treat.
About stopping in front of the door, dogs like to go different places and when you bring him back he might not be ready for the fun to end. So you could try to make it a game!! Take your dog outside the just outside the door, then back into the house. When he comes into the house without a struggle praise and feed (cheese or something else special). Repeat a few times a day. You could also play with his favorite toy inside, infront of the door. Put on his leash and play by the front door, do the same thing when you bring him home from a walk. Do not continue to pick him up! He will come to expect this and DO NOT repeat the 'come' command if he isnt responding because that will teach him he doesnt have to listen to that command every time.
