I have two dogs, 1 pitbull boxer mix and one chowmix breed. The Chow is fine but my little Pit has cunchy scabs on the ends of both ears. He has has it for almost 6 months. I tried vaseline that did not work, not dry skin. Vet has given me animax anitbiotic and antifungal ointment, used for almost two months and bleeding has stopped but crunchy scabs remain. I looked at a sample under the microscope and can ser RBCs, preoteinacious accretions and hair follicles but no mites. Looks like some transluscent hairs (fungal?). I guess I am going to have to get second opinion from another vet. Has anyone else had this problem? Both dogs are about two years old and kept in the house.
When we got our boxer the breeder said that if we kept his ears natural he could have problems. She obviously wanted her dogs cropped. I forget what she called it but we did have a time when he developed scabs on the edge of both ears that covered what almost looked like a tear. I think he may have caused it by shaking his head (which he does when he wakes up) and hitting his ears on some part of his crate. The vet gently soaked the area to remove the scabs and we were given antibiotic ointment to keep the area treated. It eventually went away and we haven't had that happen again. Did your vet give you any idea of a cause?
I had a foster dog with this problem, after trying everything to include elimination diet thinking it was an allergy issue to creaming them up & putting the top of a pair of pantyhose on her head for a week in an effort to get them to heal (we thought she was splitting them open every time she shook her head), we finally took her to a dermatologist and she was diagnosed with thromboembolic vasculitis. Doc prescribed a medication for her (sorry, can't recall the name now, I placed her more than a year ago) which had to be specifically compounded for dogs, and within 30 days her ears were finally scab free. It is a medication she'll have to be on for the rest of her life. It is relatively inexpensive (at least for an 8lb dog) as she took 2 pills per day and a bottle of 180 pills cost about $60.
