My children had a new puppy. We found out that it had a disease, and it had to be put to sleep. My daughter (10 yrs. old) was devastated. I have been looking for another dog to adopt, but lost my job, and need to wait until things are more stable. I have 2 kids and 2 cats to worry about while not working in this economy crisis! Back to the subject... Our neighbor has a yard full of mixed breed dogs. He mistreats all of them. One of them( a black lab mix)has been staying over here for the last week. He sleeps on our porch, eats any scraps I can give him, and brings us presents from other yards. LOL. He is just as sweet as he can be, we all really like him. The problem is that my daughter has developed a real attachment to him. Is this healthy for her? What if one day he just decides to not come back?
I think you need to explain to your daughter that the dog isn't yours and could never come back. she is 10yrs, and should be old enough to understand that. If he doesn't take care of his animals, I would report him. If it a big problem for your daughter, call animal control about the dog on your property. the choice is really up to you.
Whether or not my neighbor would give me the dog is not an issue, he has already been warned by animal control to make better living conditions for the animals. I just can't afford another pet right now. We all really like the puppy, I just don't want my daughter to get her heart broken again. I explained that he is not her's, but she is falling for those puppy dog eyes anyway!
Perhaps you should consider making another report if the animals are being mistreated. Also, if the dog is not bothersome to you, enjoy it's company but remind your daughter that the dog is not your families. She will understand at 10 years old.
