yesterday i adopted a dog i named her Meka. shes very sweet and my son loves her all ready. be4 we left they told me she had kennel cough i wasnt so worried about that and i needed to get her fixed which was very fine with me. when we got home i saw that she had some blood drying on her nose i just figued it was from that dog she was with in the pen at the shelter. later that evening she went #2 and it was runny. i didnt think much of it a new place and everything, but when i got up this morning there where 3 runny stools on my hardwood floors and 1 had blood in it she hasnt had anymore runny stools so far. should i be worried. i really want to keep her but if its something really major i wont be able to keep her cuz we dont have alot of money can i give her something for her runny stools or know for sure that was blood in her stool id look again but my husband took it with him to work to put it in the trash. any help would be great
she hasnt had any runny stool sence 5 am. could it just be from her getting use to the new house. im not really 100% sure if it was blood i was half awake at 5am ive been watching to see when she goes but she hasnt should i wait till she goes again?
Runny stools with blood can mean that she has coccidia (parasite). My puppy had coccidia soon after I brought her home from the breeder. The vet explained that sometimes dogs will have it in their systems, but when they are stressed (for example, when going to a new home), it can flare up. You can take a stool sample to the vet and have it diagnosed. The medicine for it is pretty cheap ($15 in Canada), and it works.
I think you should still take her to the vet, and have them do a fecal test to be sure. Just because one stool looks normal, it doesn't mean that it has completely cleared up. Maybe you should talk to the shelter, and see if they will pay for part of the visit to the vet, or the medication.
I'm not sure I read the post correctly - why on earth would your husband want to take runny dog poop to work with him? I agree with the others that a vet trip is in order. Coccidiosis is a fairly common cause of runny stool with a bit of blood in it but there can be other causes too.
My Shylo tested positive for coccidia from a routine fecal testlast month. She had no symptoms at the time. My Vet took precautionary measure, she also gave me medication for my other two at home. And, yes, it was very inexpensive, so no worries on that. Depending on your dogs weight, it can cost as little as $10 for the meds.
