Ok before I tell you my concern let me admit that I know many of you don't think animal shelters are wonderful places. I live in a very small county in a very rural area, there isn't a lot of money for fancy. We just got a new animal shelter, the only one in the area. It is something that has been needed for a long time due to the many strays here. It is being ran by the local sherrif's department and a few volunteers. Because it is strictly donation funded, the animals brought there do not receive vet care until an adoption contract has been signed by someone. This bothers me for many reasons. First, the health of the animals cannot be known. Also, because of financial reasons, only a handful of people are running it. The situation is definetly not the best, however it is all we have. My question is what kind of fundraising can I do to raise money and maybe be able to get medical services for the shelter? Right now, without a medical center on site, it is basically just a place to home them away from owners who have mistreated them. If enough money is raised, I'm sure the facility can be made into something a lot more organized. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!
I think jars or boxes around town are a good idea. Make sure to put a cute picture on whatever you use. I have a really hard time not putting my change in something for animals. My local paper used to have a pet of the week feature in the Sunday paper. It always includes a address to go see the other dogs and/or send donations. What about getting the 4-H involved. The 4-H here collects money, cleaning products, blankets, etc for our shelter. Adoption events at the park are always nice. People get to see the dogs outside a shelter environment and even if they don't adopt they might hand over some cash. You could make up some kind of poster, sticker or calendar to sell to the public or give to any business that donates regularly. I know I'm more likely to shop somewhere that helps animals. Other ideas: car washes, bake sales, door to door collections, etc.
I do alot of fundraising events with a few rescues by me and Id be glad to tell you what we do! Anything that helps these poor animals. For 2 of the rescues we do the following: 1.) every year atleast once, we put up flyers and drop them in mailboxes and put on internet sites that we are taking donations of gently used clothes, household items, etc and hold a garage sale. These usually bring in alot of donations so be ready to put things anywhere they fit. And it also gets the community inolved so it makes them feel better, those who donate feel good donating and those who shop know it helps animals. we raise anywhere between 500-2500 each time we do this. Best thing to do when holding the sale, serve hot dogs and a pop for a donation of 2 or 3 dollars it brings in a bunch more for them!
2.) we usually have walks in the park where animal owners who have dogs which are social ones donate a certain amount and then everyone gets together to kinda give the dogs a doggie play date. At this event we usually have different games set up where people can roll dice for a color you know something similar to like amusement parks they give donation and usually win a prize the prizes we use are either donated or the volunteers make them.
3.) at certain holidays we do these: christmas we do a santa with coloring books for 5 dollars they can sit with a santa and for 10 dollars they can bring thier animal and get a photo too. Easter use a bunny same things done.
4.) sometimes you can find a hall that will donate a set amount of time and then try to get donations from area stores or restaurants and have either a spaghetti dinner with a chinese auction or a pancake breakfast with an auction. we use spaghetti and pancakes as it is not high priced.
I hope this helps you! Good luck to you and the shelter!
