Please if someone can help me, I have a small dog that is due to have babies anyday, she is 63 days gestation and she is restless and her puppies are moving around in her stomach a bunch. She is breathing heavy and she keeps licking her vulva.....is this normal? Is she in labor? Will I be up all night? THank you for your help, this is her first time and my first time too.
I think you should contact an emergency vet if you don't know what to do. Or google whelping.... You should keep an eye on her yes, so you will be up all night. She could have trouble giving birth and you might have to help her along. Do you have a whelping box? I would contact a vet right away...
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
I made her a box, but she doesnt want to sit in it, she wants to be with me....she is following me everywhere if I get up. I have read a ton on line about helping her with the cord and the sac and I have a nasal sucky thing (dont know what its called) she will lay down but i can't feel contractions, i just feel the puppies moving and her stomach gurgling. I dont have a vet anywhere near where I live, so we are going to have to do this together, but I want to make sure she is going to be ok....she looks at me with her eyes as if to say"mama, what's going on with me?"....does she know?
No, we don't have puppies yet, and I am on pins and needles....she finally fell asleep last night around 230 am and when we got up this morning she was acting normal. She didn't eat this morning but she's not panting anymore....are there braxton hicks for dogs too???? I think it was false labor, but she is 65 days today from the last time she bred and she is a yorkiepoo. I think that she has 3 puppies or so, they were moving around so much last night. I am at work right now and I have my husband watching her very closely. I am going to take her temp when I get home, I have a friend on standby to cover my shift at work if my husband calls....this is so stressful....but I can't wait!
lovemybella, if it has been 65 days since your dog was bred, I think I would take her in, and get a puppy count. If she only has 3 pups, you run the risk of a cesaerian section. How much does she weigh, and what breed did you breed her to? What was his size?
Dogs do not have Braxton Hicks, however they do have a beginning stage labor in which they will have discomfort and restlessness from the pups moving down and getting in position.
If she is at 65 days, it is time to call your vet and have her checks. Small breeds are also at a bigger risk of c-sections as they get beyond that 63 day area due to the rapid growth rate of the pups. The final week or two, the pups grow at a faster rate, the same reason many breeders switch their dams to a diet food the final 2 weeks. The pups will get too large for her to pass if she is let to go too far beyond her due date.
