I love my new dog. We got him a few months ago at an animal shelter. He is a little over a year. He is a golden retriever mix. We have two other dogs, a beagle mix and a pomerianian. Our new dog Ruger has always been hyper, he still acts like a puppy which I totally understand. He gets exercise, walks, plays with his toys ( we play throw the toy a hundred times a day) He knows how to sit, give paw but thats it. I have tried training him. He was better when we first got him, now he is becoming out of control. He chews blankets up and our couch. He has many chew toys which he uses when I am around. I encourage him to chew them. He use to have rawhides till I heard they are not good for dogs. He has also started peeing in the house . and it is when I get ready to bring him out, like he is over anxious maybe? I love Ruger, I just need advise on how to train him. He is very dominate too, jumps on the other dogs, gets jealous when I pet the other dogs. He never bites or gets aggresive though :) He is a sweety.
I would say try putting him into obedience classes, if you have not done so already. It sounds like he's a very active dog, and is going to take a bit of work, and a firm hand. Persevere with rewarding him for good behaviour, and make sure he is segregated in a part of the house, where he can't destroy things, when you're away.Is he crate trained? He is probably starting to mark your house, is he neutered?
thank you for your ideas. he isn't crate trained, no room for a big crate. i have been rewarding him a lot now when he is good, he really loves his chest rubbed. he is fixed. hopefully that was just a fluke thing , he hasn't done it in two days. thank you agian :)
I agree, take him to Obedience Class! Even if you already gone thru a session, sign up again, maybe with a different trainer. It teaches you and your dog! And it is wonderful socialization for your puppy! And it sounds like you are doing lots of exercise with him. That's really good. Let him burn off steam in a constructive way and he'll have less energy to spend on destructive things--like chewing up the couch! Is he neutered? That might help too. Have fun and have a great Turkey!
