I have a new min pin and I keep reading that crate training is good and I have no problem with this, but was wondering how I keep him from barking when he is not asleep in the crate? Also how long does it generally take before he stops barking in it at night? What is a good way to curb barking? PC
How old is your pup? Try leaving the door of the crate open in the day time when you're there, and put a toy or two, and a kong filled with peanut butter in there. Try to let him see it's not a punish ment, but his own little hideaway. At night do you cover the crate with a blanket?
I have mini aussies, so I don't know how much help I will be. Depending on the age of the dog, you might have to have a potty time in the middle of the night. I personally did that once with one of mine, then she thought it was play time, so I stoped. But each breed is different, and mine are his adult size at 8wks old. I used the blanket trick, and it worked wonders. My one girl quieted down in a matter of days. I also gave them a special treat when they went into their crates. It really doesn't matter what that treat is, as long as it is something they really like, and only get it then. Mine is the chix jerky. It is can be a long process, and the more you ignore him the better it will get. If you give in at all, he will only bark more. Use earplugs, or a radio to help you sleep if you can. good luck
