We are adopting a Sheltie!!! YAY!!! He is a beautiful sable merle male standing at 17 inches. But, he one thing that seems a little weird is that they say he is around the 40 pound mark. Isn't that a little heavy? For only being 17 inches? And Stanley stands about 15 1/2 inches at the shoulder, and he weights 27. And they say that he is very active. That's why they are giving him away, cause he has too much energy for them. Oh and by the way his name is Harry! And he has beautiful blue eyes. Thanks
Shelties: Not enough words to describe how much I love them.
I didn't know shelites could have blue eyes. I bet that is really cool looking. I love the blue eyes in my aussies. If he is that tall, and has a lot of good sized bone, I dont see why he couldn't be close to that weight. I have also found that alot of people can't eyeball weight really well. In my mini aussies, I have a 17" girl that is 25lbs, and a 17 1/2" girl that is almost 40lbs. I am just making a guess here, I don't have shelties anymore. Enjoy your new furbaby
40 lbs is not unheard of for a Sheltie about 17 inches in size. He looks like he's pretty "substantial". I have a 15 3/4 inch girl who is 32 lbs - she's "a lot" of girl - but at her ideal weight. She has never been shown (she has a white mismark spot that would keep her from being competitive) but both her parents are champions and she has a champion daughter and two more pointed daughters.
The breed standard specifies ideal height NOT weight. Really, petite, tiny Shelties do not do well in the breed ring and are not what most good breeders aim for. You want a Sheltie to be substantial enough that were you to train them on sheep that they could actually herd and do it well. Overly petite dogs can't handle the elements or the job. Even 13 inch Shelties should not be petite and fine boned.
I LOVE Sable Merles. I have a blue girl whose sire was the most gorgeous Sable Merle boy. And while you can't show Sable Merles with blue eyes, they are normal and I think really pretty.
Blue eyes are totally acceptable and normal in Sable & Blue Merles - but only allowed in blues in the show ring.
