We were back at the ER today after I went to lunch, leaving a defrosting chicken in the sink, and on return didnt realize she had eaten it and went to the dog park as usual. After returning from the park and entering the living room I saw the empty plastic bag (Foster Farms) and only remaining liver on the carpet. She ate the entire bird. I am freaking out. She eats everything! I had no idea she'd do this - it wasnt completely frozen, but I started shaking and crying, and got online straight away to research. I couldnt do nothing. It would have been approx 4 hrs at this stage approx after ingestion and worried about poisoning and the bird hollow bones in her tum. I called the ER and they wanted to bring her in to induce vomiting but I was skeptical about vomiting sharp bones. The vet, at about 4.45pm, took her for an exam and wanted to xray but I couldnt afford it. They said not to worry too much as her stomach would probably break them down as some dogs are actually fed full chickens. Think 'wolves' eating chickens whole, feathers and all. Im still worried, went to CVS and bought her Pepcid AC to hopefully settle her stomach, doctors orders. I cannot feed her until tomorrow night and just have to watch her. Any advice or similar stories to help ease my mind??? I have a post on here already concerning 'Dog ate bottle of pills' on Thanksgiving. I dont believe Im a bad parent, and actually spoil her most of the time. She even sleeps in bed with me, I love her that much. This is not neglect, I promise from the bottom of my heart, but I really need advice. Please help me...
Raw-fed dogs eat raw chicken all the time. Please don't worry unless you see that your dog is in some sort of distress. Chances are she'll be just fine and will always remember the real food she got "that one time."
I feel a little better... Thank you. What a day - Im exhausted. I dont want anything to happen to my baby girl. She means everything to me and is fast asleep on her red leather chair right now. Im sure shes exhausted too. I did a little research and see that raw meat is great for a dog - BARF diet. Makes me feel a little better about what happen, but I do need to watch her like a hawk!! Shes a job in itself.... I hope she passes all the bones healthily, and shes back on chicken, rice and pumpkin stat for the next week.
I would jut watch her for any signs of distress, just in case she woofed down a couple bigger piees of bone that she didnt chew great. But, be very glad it was a RAW chicken! Dogs are fed raw chiken, bones and all as part of certain diets, and they are able to digest the raw bone. Had it been cooked, I would panic seeing that cooked bones splinter, where raw ones do not.
No, dont think your a bad dog mom...things happen. And when they do you have taken her in to the vet. She will get you all trained soon enough and you'll know what not leave out, lol.
My Amber helped herself to a whole pork shoulder roast. I was unpacking groceries and one of the pups started to whine to go outside. In the less than two minutes it took to walk the pup outside and put her in the pen and come back inside the deed was done. She left the foam meat tray and the plastic wrapping on the floor. She did seem to nap a lot the rest of the day and wasn't very interested in her regular food. LOL.
I remember you from the "pill" incident.....You really need to be more careful...I gave you some advice last time about your breed...please read it again & pay a little more attention to what you do around her. She was lucky these past 2 times, she may not be so lucky next time.
...you should also know ( if you don't already) that Weimaraner's are VERY smart!!!! If they see you taking a treat out & notice where you store it, they will go to that location & do everything they can to get more of those treats ( as an example). So be certain to keep things that can be of harm to her VERY out of reach & in secure cabinets or drawers.
OK, on the same line, yesterday I had the garbage bag on the floor while I was dismantling Christmas and my Dalmatian got into it and ate the plastic liner from the chicken tray. Not the styrofoam tray, but the full of raw chicken liner. While I was saying, "No!!" he was swallowing it whole. It's obviously too late to induce vomiting and he seriously doesn't seem to care, but is there anything else I should do? He'll probably just poop it out in the same condition it went down (just a little browner LOL). He has pooped since the incident, but he's on pills for valley fever and bad heart, so I never know what his poop will be like.
I know this is an old post, but in case anyone comes to this worried please be aware that only COOKED chicken is really a problem. Dog's teeth and digestive systems evolved to make short work of Raw prey. I feed my dog chicken carcasses, bone and all, regularly and she's as fit as a flea with white teeth and such a soft shiny coat... so don't worry!
