I have a little problem , seems to be the way things are going for me and my kids. I'm sorry if this is long winded but i would really like you guys to get the whole story. Untill eight months ago i was going to a vet i had gone to for years. I loved this man. Yes he was a little expensive but i trusted him . One of my bostons had a limp so i took him in to be checked out. He had me leave him for the day so he could do x-rays( as he said he had an emergancy come up). sO ok i leave him there , call in the afternoon like i was told . The vet tech tells me the dog has a dislocated hip, and they want to keep him over night. So me trusting them says ok. well i call back the next day and hes ready to come home. So i go get him to find out my vet had left on vacation the day before and the vet tech stayed with my dog. Ok seemed very odd but the vet tech gave me the meds my vet percribed , rimadyl and prednisone. Afew days go by and my little dog has an ulcer in his eye so i need a vet asap . So my aunt says call my vet tell her who you are and she will help you. And sure enough she did. When she found out the dog was put on rimadyl and prednisone at the same time she was very upset. My dog could have bleed to death because of this combination of drugs. we did everything to save this little guys eye, but we couldn't so we had it removed. Since then i am using her she has proven to be a wonderfull vet and not so spendy. (If you guys remember she's the vet that did the 2 hour surgery to save pebbles after the coyotes got her) So its been 6 months since all this happen and my old vet calls me wanting me to pay ( sit down for this ) $1700.00 for the services on my dog that he damn near killed him by giving this combination of drugs. I have always paid him , that was never a problem but this time i feel like he should be paying me for the damage he has caused. The last conversation was very nasty he said ill take you to court for the money. I said go ahead I saved the pill bottles with the dates the two meds were give and have all that info . He clams he never gave them to him. But the labels were written in his writing i know for sure. Should i go to court and see what happens? can i file a complaint about him? Any thoughts on this would help thanks in advance
I'm sorry to hear about your dog. Glad it is okay now though. For now I would wait it out and see if they take you to court. Its not right for you to have to pay the whole bill. And they should be the ones to pay for the bill for going back to a vet from the problems they caused. Let us know what happens.
I'd not only wait til the took me to court, but I'd file a report with your state vet association. Your dog could've died and others are at risk. I know you like your vet - but what happened was beyond wrong.
Call a lawyer and have him send a letter to the vet if nothing else.
If the vet takes you to court you are reacting to his action and it looks like you just don't want to pay that big bill. However, if he takes you to court and you can show your lawyer sent him a letter that you plan on filing a complaint with the AVMA and possibly file civil charges against him then even if you don't do anything else you can show proof of a reason why you did not pay the bill.
Just a letter from you lawyer stating you have no intentions of paying for faulty services will carry a lot of weight if he takes you to small claims court.
I just thought I would let you know, that while you are waiting to settle all this in court (which I think you should sue the vet in smalls claims court) that vet has the power to report your nonpayment to the credit bureaus which could damage your credit.
If I were in your shoes, I would get my new vet to fill out power work stating the issues your dog went through due to the other vets negligence. Because that is what it was, negligence. I would also ask to see the vets reports on your dog, because like humans, vets keep hospital records, and you have every right to see the reports, especially since he is asking you to make a payment.
The vet has to know he was wrong. He should have notified you he was leaving on vacation and your dog was not going to be under his care, but rather his staff. Not that, that is against the law, but you were under the impression your dog was being left with him.
Demand respect, your dog is your family. If this was your child would you think twice?
I agree that you should have your lawyer write a letter of intent. Also, without question, absolutely contact the AVA... it seems this vet was more concerned with going away on vacation that delaing with your pet, and when confronted with his mistake he's trying to bully you. Dont let this happen to someone else, in fact, you could report to the local paper explaining the situitation. Maybe they can get your back on this one. Good lucka nd I am so glad your dog is okay
No more room in the house, but so much in our hearts.
I would be carefull about going to the papers or any other thing the vet can turn on you and charge you with slander. Good move going to your lawyer and having him write a letter explaining why you are disputing the bill. Your lawyer will know how to handle it to protect you
