My min pin is very aggressive towards people he does not know. He barks at, lunges at, circles and sometimes snips at people. I am scared he is going to really hurt someone one of these days. Need help, please and thank you. How can I fix this? How well do bark collars work? Please help.
I would seek a perfessional trainer to help with this. Also do not let him be around people he doesn't know. Get an x-pen or crate for him when people come over. Walk him on a harness that way you can pick him up quickly if someone doesn't listen to your warning about him being agressive. I have heard of a company called Bark Busters. That are supposed to be wonderful, buy I have no experiance from them.
Toy dogs can be come agressive from fear, because of their small size many of them have been stepped on or hurt by people not being careful enough around them. Is it possible for you to hold the dog while introducing it to a stranger? Will the dog allow a stranger to hold it once they have been introduced? I have a neutered Chihuahua that is very friendly and outgoing. From the time he was three months old I took him places with me , especially going to garage sales. He has learned to like people and will let even children pet and hold him. I have always insisted that the children must sit down while holding OREO and have shown them how to hold him so he feels safe.He still barks when strangers first enter our house but his tail is wagging the whole time and he is dancing on his hind legs wanting to be picked up. Ask a friend or neighbor to help you train your dog to accept other people, the more he finds out people are not going to hurt him the more friendly he will become.Do not isolate your dog this will only reinforce the fear agression not cure it.
It was pretty obvious that the people I rescued Joe from were abusive to him. I had lifted my hand one day to wave "hi" and he crouched down to the ground as if to say "please don't hit me". My heart broke when I saw that but I am very happy he is with me now. :o) I think this may be why he is the way he is. While he is a lot better than when I first got him, he still has a little way to go. He won't let people pick him up unless he REALLY knows them. Joe is skittish once people come in and circles like a shark. He also does not like "new people" to be standing between him and I so he moves in between. If I am holding someone's baby, he jumps up and wants me to hold him. Separation anxiety? I will try the citronella collar. Thanks for the advice!
Abuse is definetly a possibility, but it is probly just a lack of early social skills. Start useing food rewards with strangers, praise the dog for good behavior. Start basic training everyday, training can boost the confidence.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
