I just joined and hope to become a more frequent member of this forum as it looks like a very active and helpful community. I currently own no dogs, though I have owned a great share in the past. My family of 3 is now ready to add our first canine family member together, and after much time spent researching breed types and looking at what our local shelters had (save a life!), we've got about 2 breeds that are most suited for our lifestyle and living situation--the Shiba Inu and the Australian Shepherd. Most likely we won't end up with the Shiba Inu as my husband has reservations about them having the tendency to bolt out of doors. We are really trying to find a dog that maxes out at around 30lbs, give or take a few, so size is important.
Anyway, because we still haven't actually adopted a dog, I wanted to post a picture of a puppy I saw last week at a local shelter, but it was still not ready to be adopted at the moment. It will be available starting tomorrow, but since I can't stop thinking about it, I was wondering if anyone on here might have any guesses as to what it's breeds are? I'm almost positive it's at least 2 breeds, and its coat and eye colors remind me of a very common combination of breeds I see around here. My guess is Australian Shepherd mixed with Australian Cattle Dog (or heelers as some people call them I think?). Of course, if I end up with this dog, I will be tempted to try one of those DNA tests out there, but for now, I would like to hear what people think.
Here is the pic of the puppy. They think he is about 1.5m old, and they found him near some trailer park. (that's all the info I had). He has one clear blue eye and one brown eye (not easy to see from the picture). I took this with my cell so it may lack some detail.
It is really hard to tell on a puppy that age all you can really go on is color, and it could be a mix of so many breeds that carry blue merle. Australian Shepherd mix would be my first guess, but somehtng about his body shape and coat lead me to agree with the other poster about Catahoula.
I find it funny that you would have it down to a Shiba and an Aussie though, the breeds are so TOTALLY different. Aussies tend to be good at obedience, Shibas can never be off leash, Aussies like to be with their people, Shibas dont really care about their people unless their food dish is empty other than both being double coated breeds they are completely different. And yep I have 2 Shibas, and will never be getting another one, I like a dog that acts like a dog not a cat, LOL. Good luck with the puppy search, if it were me I would adopt and save a life though.
This absolutely adorable puppy looks to me like an Aussie mix, though I'll admit that I'm not familiar with the Catahoula. But it sounds to me like this little guy has already got a spot in your heart ... need I say more? LOL!
Thanks for all the guesses guys. I think I'm going to have to cry now and smack myself for not leaving the house earlier today. The shelter opened at 10a CT, and I got up earlier this morning to make sure I got there on time. I ended up debating with the husband about something and didn't leave the house. I was going to be there as soon possible to adopt the puppy. I ended up calling the shelter, and asked about it, and it turned out that not even 5m after they opened, someone else had already come to adopt it. :( Their policy is that if two or more parties want the same animal at the same time, they do a drawing. I guess had I been there, they would have done this drawing. It's such a low visibility shelter that I did not think I'd have to worry about it, but I guess that's what I get for not getting up there sooner. :( I hope the family that adopted the puppy was not getting him as just some "Christmas Present" and that he will be in a good forever home. I'm so sad right now. Today was the only day I could have brought him home. I was sure he'd be gone pretty quickly, but not within 5m. I guess the search will have to continue, and I'll always have a special spot in my heart for "Rooney". :( Thanks again for all the help folks!
