My dad got me and the boys a puppy for Christmas and she is wonderful !!
My questions are this...they told him she was a miniature german sheperd. They said she was about 6 months old.
I am beginning to think that she is a reg german sheperd and much younger. She sleeps aLOT, like a baby. She looks just like a german sheperd although she has skinnier legs I think and her paws are not huge like german sheperd puppies are. She is jjust learning how to play, and can still not grip a toy hard.
I dont knwo how to tell her age better, just a feeling i have, she acts like a baby. and if she IS younger then she could end up being a regular size....
anything i can look for to try to pinpoint ? teeth, etc ??
There is no such thing as a "miniature German Shepherd." If anything it's a made up name the "breeder" might have used to rip off your father. It's possible that she is not purebred or that she is just out of standard. (I saw her pic and she is cute!) This is an awesome forum and if you stick around you will learn so much! Have you talked to your father about where he got the pup? You raise a lot of reasons why giving a dog as a gift is not the best idea. Has the dog seen a vet? Did you get any sort of shot records? What about registration papers? They would provide you with a date of birth and the contact info for the breeder. I don't know how old your boys are, but having a puppy die from parvo is heartbreaking at any age. My big guy had it and survived, but it was still stressful and expensive to treat. I believe GSDs are one of the breeds that appear to be prone to parvo. No matter wear she came from, love her, train her and give her a forever home. This is a great opportunity to teach your boys about responsible pet ownership.
