What do we do. We told them exactly what we were told she was by the rescue. Jack russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix so why can't people just let it go. She is a quiet timid little dog that doesn't bother anyone....she is about 23 pounds. (by the way we also think she has some corgi in her) But people are convinced she is a vicious pit bull since a kid called her that.
What can we do. Should we break our lease. Can we fight this? I don't think its fair that people are trying to get her taken away for being something she isn't
Obviously your neighbors are blind if they think your dog is an APBT. I would ignore them, and in the meantime, get a note from your vet, with his guess on the dog's breeding, so that if you ever have to present it, you have some type of documentation. I've never heard of anything so stupid in my life. Download some pictures of APBT's and then put them beside your dog's picture......anyone with an ounce of common sense should know the average weight and looks of an APBT. It does'nt even remotely resemble the mix you have. By the way, if your dog has presented no problems, why are the neighbors questioning you in the first place? Paranoid much? Some people are so ignorant it never ceases to amaze me. I would certainly not break the lease, you are within your rights, as long as you are allowed to have a pet in the first place. Good luck.
I am slightly paranoid about it. You see our dog barked at this kid when he tried to run her down on his skateboard and so he went and told mommy she was a pit bull and since then our door has been vadalized by this kid and now all the adults think she is a pit bull and they've gone to the management
Sorry if I gave you the impression that you were paranoid...I meant your neighbors. Just stick to your guns, and firmly insist on the dog's breeding, and deny any APBT in the mix. If the management has an ounce of intelligence they will also know by looking at your dog, what type of mix she is. Furthermore, I would also make a complaint against the child who tried to run down your dog with a skateboard. Good luck.
Grab the leash and take your dog up to the management office. Explain to them that THIS is what a child said was a pit bull. From your description, it doesn't sound like he could possibly even almost appear to be a pit bull or mix thereof. I like the note from your vet idea too, but it sounds like your dog is so clearly not a bully breed that taking him up to the office is probably all you need to do. May as well bring any paperwork that you have from the rescue as well.
"Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those that matter, don't mind...And those that mind....don't matter."
I would march my self right down to the mangement office with your dog, and let them know how stupid your neighbors are. He is cute as a button, and doesn't look anything like a pit.
I would then let your neighbor know if they continue to harrass you about the dog, you will file charges with the authorities.
Stupid people live all over the country. You need to take a stand on the this issue, and demand that management take care of the problem. There is no reason you should be responsible for breaking the lease. If the dog is a problem let the landlord be responsible for that. GEt info from your vet on the dogs breed, and print several different pics from different sites. Print pits, chis, and what ever else you think the mix is.
The last option, and to have your dog DNAed for breeds. It is possible. Do you have anything from the rescue you got him from. They might be able to help also.
I don't want to take the risk with a DNA test who knows what small traces of breeds could be in her. from generations back. But I do still have the paperwork from the pound (where the rescue got her) saying she is a Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix.
I would do as the others say-be proactive about it. Bring it to the management's attention BEFORE anyone else does. And yes-let them know about the vandalism and the kid mistreating your dog. That is totally unacceptable.
PuppyLove1986...I've never laughed so hard in my life! Are these people for real? If you have an APBT there, then I must be raising Afghan Hounds. You have a lovely little dog, and it bears no resemblance at all to a Pittie. I agree with the others, go after management, and if you have to, take some pictures of APBT's with you. Don't wait for the rest of the building to gang up on you. It's so obvious what the mix is in your dog, I can't believe anyone would think otherwise, obviously people who don't have a hot clue about dogs. By the way, it would be a shame if you accidentally ran over that little S%$#'S skateboard. Good luck, and keep us posted.
LOL Pen, I think your Afghan Hounds might be a little out of standard. See my Whippet in my avatar, LMAO.
Puppylove, I too would talk to manangment. Explain to them that you dog is not a pit and that the boy is the real menance anyway. See about filing a formal complaint with someone. I'll never understand tenancy laws. Kids are more annoying, more dangerous and more destructive than most dogs. Not to mention all the things their parent sue for when the dumb/unsupervised kids get hurt. Yet it's fine to have a no pet clause and illegal to ban kids. I guess I'll never be a landlord.
Well management is already questioning us on it and we are standing strong on what she is. The vet has all her documents listed as Jack Russell mix as does her rabies records. The vet will stand behind that. The sad thing is these are some of the nicest apartments in the area (sadly about 2 months ago they lowered Rent for new tenents and that is when all the trouble started) On the plus side I've talked to my friend who is a lawyer and they said they can't do a whole lot about her being that all her records say Jack Russ mix and that the complex most likely wouldn't want to fork out the money to try to prove that she is something she isn't. The police have been involved with the vandalism issue though the complex was supposed to have all this cleaned up by now but our door is still covered in junk. the same 13 year old who pegged her as a pit. He also was one of the boys the destroyed our door. We used to live in an area that wasn't very nice and never once have we had these problems. Now we move to an area that has little crime and we get problems.
Luckily for us and lets keep our fingers crossed we will be relocating in the next few months. We are looking to relocate with my husbands job and that will take us to North Carolina, Charlotte infact and from what I know they are a real pet friendly area. Can anyone confirm that? I lived there for awhile so it will be good to go back. But for now this is a headache, a headache we didn't need and didn't expect in such a nice area
You know Puppylove, I'm starting to get a strange feeling about you...there are just a lot of discrepancies in your posts. I re-read all your posts...heck you just joined a couple weeks ago. In your post about "what breed is my dog" you talked about a picture of a jrt/pit mix that looked just like Sasha, but then went on to say that nobody had ever mistaken her for a pit bull. This was on 12/22, so it seems a whole lot has changed since then. Also, in one post you are saying you may have to move in with your grandparents because of the economy, in another post you say that you are moving to where you spent Christmas, and yet in this thread you ask whether you should break your lease and move because you are afraid that people think Sasha is a pit bull.
Also, you mention your husband several times but yet you sound (to me at least) to be a teenager. I could certainly be wrong, but things just don't seem to add up quite right to me.
I'm 23 married for a year and a half. The neighbors have been suspicious of our dogs for awhile which has led to me looking at what my dog could be other than Jack/chi mix. If my husband doesn't get this job in NC where I have family we will have to move in with my grandparents until he does. Because we are on 1 income. In the last 3 weeks our neighbors kid has vandalized our door with vinegar and baking soda because he said if his parents wouldn't do anything about our dog he would. Which is why I brought up the what is my dog thing. Because no one before these neighbors has ever called her a pit before. I have my father in NC who is trying to help us get moved out there and get work. If not we will have to move in with my grandparents because our income won't make rent much longer. So that is the decrepencies you are seeing. We don't have a set plan but we are looking at all our options and they go back and forth. Considering I only have a high school education I am having trouble finding work. My husband has a masters and can't find a better job. i've only been on here a for a short time and I've posted tons because I like to ask questions and get feedback. It helps me work through the current issues. Mostly dog related. All I want to do is work with dogs and can't get a break there either
I'm asking about breaking the lease due to my dogs safety and my peace of mind....we dont have too much longer left but I don't want to lose my dog
PuppyLove1986, do not let these ignoramuses even try to tell you your dog is other than what she is. You know her mix, like I said before, go to management and the police if this kid does'nt stop his behaviour. I'm sorry you're in the financial bind that you're in, unfortunately, a common sign of the times these days. I wish you the best of luck with moving forward, and keeping your dog safe. Good luck to you both in finding new jobs, and I wish you the best of health and good wishes for 2009. Kind regards, Pen2.
