My husband and I recently moved to Alabama from NJ to be near our son and daughter in law and 7 year old grandson. I have 2 Chihuahuas. Daisy, 4 and Chico, 5. Daisy is extremely protective of me and my husband. She snaps and barks constantly at my grandson. He calls her "mean" and "evil" because she attacks him even when he just walks by her. She hates him it seems. She is extremely loving to us, but just hates him. He is a kind boy and does not tease her. I watch like a hawk! Could anyone PLEASE give me suggestions on what to do? I don't want to have to get rid of my grandson! LOLOL (just kidding)
I would guess that your little angel is somewhat afraid of the child, and is sort of lashing out. Dogs that are afraid, are not protective, hes not being protective, he just gets a little bit of confidence being close to you. I would call it aggression. The first thing you should do is stop putting the dog in that situation that he feels threatened. Start the introduction to the child slow, have the child throw treats at the dog in the beginning, take it slow that is the key. Over several weeks, if you take it slow, the dog will start to associate the child with food and good things. Never scold the the dog for acting out towards the child, this will only increase the tension of the child's presents. If you have to, put the dog in another room or crate the dog in another room, or leave it at home till you've worked on it.
