Hi guys! Yes I'm new around here. I live in South Africa, Nelspruit. Here we have a very special dog breed called a Boerboel: meaning: the farmers dog. This is a extremely large dog, very owner orientated, very protective and does not like strangers at all. This breed is mede to protect and will fight till death.
Mine is still a puppy - 12 weeks old. I live on a farm. Thus: I got myself the "Farmers dog". But I'm horribly tired as I'm typing this. She howels all night! ALL NIGHT! I realy mean: ALL night! I never goes out when she cries. She'll think that she's getting what she wants if she cries. I do sneak out and open her enclosure so she can run freely a bit. That makes her stop for about 5 min. Then... The same routine.
I'm so tired! But want to win this dogs' loyalty and want her to like being my dog and partner. I love animals and had a lot of dogs before. But this is new to me.
I cant let her sleep inside. Soon she'll be a very large dog. Not made for house training. And I can't afford to make her used to sleeping in the house. She has her own large warm kennel.
Can somebody please help me. Advise, support, encouragement...! Anything!
Keep in mind that dogs are pack animals, they don't naturally want to be alone. The howling is about being alone, its kind of like him saying "Hello is anyone there." This dog wants to be with you, not alone. I think leaveing him alone outside needs to be done slowly, make it something for him to look forward to, leave bones, kongs, things he can spend time doing, like chewing.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
Most farm dogs that I know of are extremly people oriented. They want to be with their people not away from them. I can't say I know much about the breed, but from what I have read they like to be with people so she isn't happy out side all by herself. Has she learned her job. A herding dog is happy out side as long as it knows its job is to protect the livestock.
Thanks for the posting guys! She finally slept through the night last night. I spend time with her after dark and made her fall asleep while I was there with here. Also took her for a long walk just before dinnertime and showed her that itís okay to be alone on the big farm. She actually loves the farm and now finds sleeping outside very attractive! We both say a big thank you!
