I didn't say that people convicted of crimes shouldn't be sent to prison. I suppose everyone has their own hot-button crime for which all offenders should get life. And it's no surprise that people here should be particularly sensitive to animal cruelty. My concern is that there is a practical limitation to the attitude of "lock them up and throw away the key." Do you have any idea how much of our taxes go to supporting our prison population?
I am no Vick apologist, yet I have no problem with him pursuing gainful employment. About the worst thing we can do to convicts is make it nearly impossible for them to find a job after they get out. Is there any wonder that the recidivism rate is so high?
You should do some reading about what the primary purposes of incarceration are, and how those really play out. Are you concerned that Vick will offend again (with everyone watching)? Prison time as a deterrent (e.g. "Don't do that or you'll end up in jail like THAT poor guy") does not work well. So do you want to see him stay in jail just for vengeance sake?
I'm not against Vick getting employment; just the little time he got. That's just my opinion. I don't mind paying taxes to keep the creeps off the street - but there are people who get away with a lot of things and never see a day in jail.
Time will tell; I don't think Vick will do the dogfighting thing again. He hada lot to lose and knows it; whether he is sincere or not about it is another story. But who cares now anyway? I'm always one to give second chances to those who deserve it. If he proves to be sincere, then those taxes to keep him in jail for 19 months were well worth the price. The problem with the prison system is that it doesn't rehabilitate anyone so yes of course, there will be higher recidvism rate.
I think we have to try and forgive; hard thing to do but the sweetest thing is the new lives those dogs are living.
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
Because Pete Rose bet against his own team to lose...one that he was coaching. He denies this still to this day, even though there are mountains of evidence proving he did...he claimed he bet for them to win. That's the big deal...is they believe Pete is lying.
I believe a dog's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment he holds dear, is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-with a ball in his mouth."
I dunno' Gunny, bettig & lying vs running a dog fighting/betting/gambling ring and then personally torturing and killing dogs... I'm thinking there seems to be a double standard for FB players. This said as a BIG time FB fan.

Vick shouldn't be allowed to live his dream when he made dogs suffer then die. Going to jail for a few years then going back to living his dream isn't anything the pitt's had to go through. It is so messed up that dogs have to be uthinized becuase some human made them fight especially when they already have short lives. Humans aren't uthenized for beating other people up we just go to jail for a couple weeks and are freed again .
