I haven't ever raised chickens. My next door neighbors had them for a while. They would constantly get out of the cage they were kept in and would come over and dig up our flower beds. We would just shoo them back into their own yard. I kinda liked the little buggers. I actually even liked the rooster crowing in the mornings, thought it was kinda neat. But we live in a residential neighborhood, and not in a very rural area. The neighbors on the other side of the house with the chickens were much less pleased than I because the chickens chose to hang out right under their bedroom window, not be able to figure out how to get back on their own side of the fence, and carry on loudly! They called animal control and AC made them get rid of the chickens. Apparently our zoning laws don't allow "livestock" within a certain amount of feet from any house.
