Hi I really love the golden retriever although it does shed but we occasionally go on a 2 and a half hour drive to my grandparents who live on a farm we need to be able to fit it in the back with us Can any golden owners give me some advise on grooming and traveling Thanks slot
I once had a beloved Golden, Louie. I shaved him down myself one spring and he looked absolutely awful. Poor fellow, I think he was embarrassed! Just lots of brushing and an occassional bath, I know burrs and begger's lice can be a big problem in the fall with the longer coated breeds. I take my little Griff to the groomer about every eight weeks to be cut like a Schnauzer.
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read!! Groucho Marx
Travelling or home would be the same. Regular brushing is what works best to keep shedding down. Bathe him, but not the night immediateky before you leave as they tend to shed heavier the first day or 2 after a bath. I have heard great things about the furminator....may be worth trying.
You need to clarify a bit. What do you mean by "in the back"? Are you talking about the backseat of a SUV, large sedan or tiny two door vehicle? Who is us; two large adults, one kid?
The standard says they should be "55-75lbs and 21.5-24" tall", with females usually being smaller. My Rottweiler, who substantially bigger than that, doesn't like to ride in the car. He stands up on the back seat and it would be difficult for anyone to ride back there with him. My brother has two large dogs, a pitbull and a poodle, and a small two door hatchback. He has no problem driving 12 hours, with both dogs in the back seat,to visit for the holidays. I can't help much with grooming. Brush, brush, brush. Bathing can remove quite a bit of dander and loose hair, but goldens can be prone to dry itchy skin. Over bathing can cause both, so I wouldn't rely on it. You may consider professional grooming b/c they have the skills and equipment to get the dogs super clean.
