My chihuahua is 1 1/2 yrs old and pregnant with her first litter. She will be 7 weeks pregnant in 2 days. I cant tell if she is going to produce milk for her pups. Her teets are a little swollen but really only 2 of them are. Will the milk really start to come in over the next 2 weeks or should i be concerned?
Most of the time a mother starts producing milk when the puppies reach the birth canal. I would suggest taking her to the vet about 5 days or so before her due date. Have an x-ray done to see how many she is going to have. You are going to have to watch her very closely Chi's are prone to c-sections. A good vet should be able to tell you if they think the puppies will be able to pass naturally or not. good luck, and I wouldn't worry about the milk. I had a bitch not produce milk until the pups were born.
Actually all dogs do not produce "MILK" until a few days after birth, the FIRST MILK is actually COLUSTRUM and is much THICKER AND DENSER than the actually milk and colustrum appear more like a heavy cream this is full of anitibodies to help puppies build there immune system. To help have a good milk production it is important mommy drinks lots of fluid I have large litters and a good way to do this is to pour chicken broth over dog food, it helps supply extra liquid but also helps them to drink more water.
Sometimes there is very little sign that a bitch is even pregnant and certainly nothing to express. Her check up at the vet shouldgive you some more information. It's also very common to have the very back set of nipples fuller, and larger than the rest. BreezyRidge, do you give your females low sodium chicken broth, or do you make your own?
