I hope some one can give us some insite to this problem, please alllow me to give u the full picture on this problem. We took our new pet in about two weeks ago he was being very neglectided my sister in law got him from a man that was MRDD,he left Bennie in his cage all day and never fed him or waterd him. Bennie is a pomeranian and they are very small dogs to begin with but he is so skinny its so sad,we love him very much, but i'm worried he has a mental problem with water if that makes any sense, I have never seen any thing like it ever and i grew up with many animals.bennie will even lick up his owm urine, wwe cant take a shower with him the bathroom with us or he will jump in and just go nuts drinking the water in the tub,I hate not giving the little thing water but i have limeted him cause if i don't he just pee's and pee's all over.i'm not so worried about him peeing on my carpet I"m worried about how crazy he is when he is around water it's scary.just a note he does eat his food like a normal dog.I'm wondering if he thinks he is never going to get water agin cause he was so deprived of it what do you think ???
Considering the way he was kept, he needs to be taken to the vet for a check up to make sure no permanent damage was done when he was not being fed, watered. Have the vet do a CBC on him to see wha his levels are. This may give you a cause for the excessive thirst.
Many dogs have a good time in the tub and love to drink from the tap, licks the water off your legs, etc.
I agree with the above postings. I also think that you're right (OP) about him thinking he's never going to get another drink, so drink everything in site, while he can! As you have him around longer, he will become accustomed to the fact that you are looking after him, and that he doesn't have to worry. If he checks out fine at the vet, take a look at the food you are feeding him. As was pointed out before, the sodium content in the food might be one reason he's thirstier than usual, but in all honesty, I would think it has a lot to do with neglect, poor little guy. What type of food are you feeding him? Thankyou for taking him in, he's a lucky little dog. Good luck with him.
