Is a border collie a good pet we live in a smallish house with a pool and up the road from the beach. It will be given excersise 2 times a day but will it be able to be left home alone for around 7 hours?(while at school and work) Any border collie owners can u give some advise on what they are like to live with. Thanks alot.
I have Mini Aussies, which are very similar to the Border Collie only smaller. The full sized Aussies are pretty much identical in my opinion.
The amount of excersize they need is amazing. The are extremly high-drive dogs and very active. They would need room to run, and I don't belive 2 times a day would do it. Several 1/2 hour plus trips to the beach to run and play in the water would do excellent. They like water alot, so the pool would be fun for them, and very dangerous if in-ground. They do love there people very much. I consider aussies to be velcro dogs. However if they do not get the suffant amount of excersize, they can become distructive. They can be amazing, wonderful pets. Extremly smart. I couldn't see my life without one or the other. They also would be a wonderful dog if you planned on doing agility or obediance with them.
A Border Collie would be a good family pet if it could work, but if not, they can quickly become bored, destructive, and even aggressive. I agree with the former poster, a Border Collie would definitely not be the type of dog I would recommend to a working couple, with a walk once or twice a day.
