Hello! New to the boards but have an issue with my 5 year old Wire Haired Fox terrier, Rags. We love him dearly but he has begun becoming more aggressive in the last couple of months. Lately he has been urinating in the house (on the children's toys only- yes we have 2 kids ages 4 and 5). He also growls or snaps whenever he is reprimanded for anything and if we go to put him in the backyard he will retaliate with a growl. I will also mention that when we go to work, he is crated as he tends to tear up things. He freaks whenever we leave, barks incessantly...almost to the point of high anxieties/fear of being alone. We love him, but this is becoming a real concern. Does anyone have any thoughts on what is causing this behavior? He would occasionally growl but this is blatant and even scary for me at times because I believe he will bite if the chance presents itself.
Complete vet check is in order. Could be any number of medical problems (hypothyroidism is one thing that comes to mind) But medical problems need to be ruled out before you can move on to the behavior issues.
Sadly Moongoddess is not accepting PM or is longer with us.
Moongoddesses problem is, and I am only guessing, is that this breed needs lots and lots of mind stimulation. Not just exercise but how do you say it, a job to do. Lure training is a good idea to get rid of all that energy. These dogs need to be constantly busy. A bored and frustrated dog will turn to aggression if they cant get the point through to us humans.
I have a Mini Fox Terrir or some will call Tenterfield Terrier. Millie is her name and often she will howl at the back door for me to come and play. Sadly this forum doesnt allow me to post a piccy of my dogs.
Have a read of this link. It explains what to expect in a Fox Terrier.
