I saw on tv the other day a pitbull being taken from an owners home. I think she lived somewhere they were illegal due to fighting rings, but it kind of upset me. I have mixed opinions but still I find it somewhat unfair. The dog belonged to an older woman, who I'm sure had lived there all her life. The dog was her only companion and had not been socialized and was very aggressive to other people. I understand dogs like that are dangerous, but at the same time. The woman was taking care of her dog, being responsible and not participating in illegal acts. Why then does it seem fair to seize her dog and then put it to sleep? Is it her fault she lives somewhere that now deems this dog illegal? Why not go after the illegal parties that do abuse their dogs and force them into illegal cruel activities. I just don't understand it. I know the authorities believe the dog to be dangerous and if it got loose could hurt someone. I understand that aspect, but at the same time, a responsible owner takes precautions. Besides that point, dogs can be rehabilitated. I don't want to preach, just curious as to what others thought about it. I see both sides, but it still doesn't make it right.
In that particular situation, it would depend on how the dog was housed and how secure her yard was. If the dog had gotten loose in the past, and had the temperment problems you descibe, then I can see them taking the dog. To me, part of owning any "dangerous" breed is making sure your dog is an ambassador for the breed. If not, you're failing your dog. It's a shame that the pit was unsocialized and aggressive.
In general, I'm against breed bans. Breed bans are bad enough, but at least some places "grandfather" in the dogs that are already there. It's one thing for a person to bring in a dog that is illegal, but having your dog become illegal overnight is ridiculous. It's also very un-American.
Where they taking it due to a problem? Or just because they heard there was a pit there? I can see how a dog would misunderstand the situation and become aggressive in that case. I stopped watching alot of the ASPCA(?) shows as soon as I saw them put a pit down for no other reason other than it was a pit. Isn't it kinda against what they are supposed to be about? Can't even check them out and find a rescue somewhere that does allow them? Brings to mind the word genocide to me .........
Thats crazy to take and kill a pit just caused its banned and im totally against the ban thing Ive owned pits and my mom had a rott and both breed are as loveable as can be went treated right and taken good care of.And yes pitts can be reabilitated if they want to take the time with them, like for a instance that just happened to me,I just took in a starved and abused pit bull named ginger she didnt like my cat for sure and she was intimitated by my chow so i worked with her a few days and she was starting to be ok with the dog but not the cat so i had to give her to my sister who has to kittins and a small dog and 2 kids and she is getting along fine with them and even the dogs next door that r large dogs.So they can change if given the chance and the time.
