My Mini long hair dasch just turned 4 y/o and to celebrate he slipped a disk! I immediately got him into surgery (5k is a small price to pay to keep my baby happy) He is 2 days out of surgery and has yet to move his legs yet, but he is responding to pain (which they said is good) The vet keeps giving me statistics in regards to recovery which doesn't help me at all. I want to hear from others who have had their baby go through this and tell me how long it took till they could walk again (can they walk), what can be done to help them heal faster or any other suggestions you may have. I am terrified he wont be the same crazy midget he was before and I hope your feedback will keep me optimistic.
Hi, my larger mini-doxy had the same thing a month ago. He too had the surgery. He is 11 years old, a long haired, but we just couldn't take the chance on not giving him the surgery .... Keep up the good thoughts. Mine, Kookie, couldn't really move his legs at all for at least a week or so, but he too had the "deep pain feelings".... yesterday he actually took about 8 steps moving both legs before listing over to the side. I do exercises with his legs, but opted not to take him for physical therapy as it is quite a way from our home and he is a terrible car passenger. We still keep him crated most of the time .... only keeping him out to hold him and for food and bathroom breaks. Good luck with your little guy ... keep me posted on his progress... but it does get better.
