hey everyone im 14 years old in 8th grade and i have a HUGE mental block in running tumblling. I have high school cheer tryouts in 6 weeks and i really want to make it but i wont thourgh my round off backhandspring. My coach that i take with gets sooo mad at me when i wont do it with a spot, she screams at me and calls me a baby and say "you have to want it." well i do want it! i want to have it sooo bad but i just wont thourgh it. I only have a couple of weeks left before tryouts and if i dont have this then i wont make the squad. HELP ME! i need to know how to get over my runnning tumbling mental block and fast!
First of all I would have a good talk to your coach about her manner of teaching. That kind of ridiculous pressure just serves to make you even more nervous. If that does'nt work, I would take your concerns to the principal. On the topic of running, tumbling, round offs and or backsprings, here is what I would do, if you can. Get a spotter to go with you to the gym, maybe even a couple, and your Mom if she's available. Make sure nobody else is around. Just quietly say to your self, that you can do this, and proceed, practicing the hardest part of it, over and over. Once you do it a couple of times the right way, you will feel much better. You are perfectly capable of executing the skills, what you need is practice, with no pressure. Give it a try, and see what happens. Tune that loudmouthed coach out in class, and just concentrate on the mat, and your skills. I wish you the very best of luck, and I'm sure you will make the squad. Just don't get in a huge flap over it, and stop worrying. It will fall into place. Let us know how you are doing.
thanks for the advise! well the only problem about my coach is that she is the varsity coach where i go to school, for high school. so if i make it then she will be my coach. but freshman make jv no matter what. so at least i will have another year to work on my tumbling. Also, My mom goes to each practice but she is just as hard on me as my coach is because she wants me to be a cheerleader. Which for a long time i didnt really want to do because it didnt seem like fun to me. But, I thought if i became one she wouldnt be soo hard on me. i have my standing but i guess just the fact that im running before the b.h.s is what is making me nervous.
Ah I joke that my daughter has the most expensive back handspring ever. She was what they call a "head case" the ability was there, she was scared. My suggestion is to call an all star cheer gym and ask them what they charge for private lessons. A couple lessons one on one with someone that spots each and every day will probably help you get over your block. Good luck at tryouts!
Haha, that sounds like me,they say i have a mental block. Well i got to twist and shout, you might have heard of it. Its the best cheer gym that we have in Oklahoma. I had a private on friday and im happy to say that it went really well! my mom recorded it on the camera and after i watched it i got a lot more confident in my running tumbling. :) tryouts are in like 5 weeks so i will have to start throughing it soon, but i think that i will by then. Thanks for all the advice and support. I will keep you guys updated on tryouts.
hey, i just wanted to update everyone.. I made it! i was one of like 30 girls to try out that made it the team on 12. and one of the best things about the whole thing is that my gift from my parents for making it is a iphone!:)
