I just had my 8 year Old German Shepard treated for Heart worms last Thursday. She was acting okay right after the treatment, a little soreness but good spirits. As of Friday evening about 6ish. She started acting very tired she had a dizzy spell. By Saturday she couldn't go 3 feet without falling down, and breathing very hard. Also her stomach is looking bloated. As of today she is acting better but her stomach is still bloated and her breathing is still labored. This is Monday The vet said bring her in any time just give me a call right before you leave so I can have her file out. I called at noon to say my husband is home we are coming that way. They said the vet is out till 3pm for lunch. What? I'm not sure if this is normal stuff I'm dealing with here or if I need to get her in ASAP.
The treatment for heartworm kills the worms and they can break loose and plug blood flow causing stroke and/or death. This is why the dogs must be kept quiet and be watched carefully for several days, I would have not done this treatment on a dog of that age there is more risk of death from complications than from the heartworms. This is the advice given by my vet concerning rescued dogs that have heartworms and are over seven years of age.I hope your dog recovers.
