I have 2 cats and am thinking of getting a dog as well, partly to get me out of the house and walking on a regular basis. A local shelter has what they think is a yorkie-chinese crested mix (imo it might be a pure-bred powder-puff), and as far as I can tell the only reason it wouldn't be a good match is I'm away at work 9.5 hrs/day 5 days/week. Would the 2 cats be enough company for it during that time? Or is it likely to pine or get nervous/snappy as some dog websites warn? Any advice, please! This little guy would be my first dog, not including dogs the family had when I was a child.

I know nothing about the temperament of the Chinese Crested. However the large majority of pet owners work so many dogs are left on their own for 9 hrs or more a day and the dogs do just fine. He may exhibit signs of seperation anxiety as a lot of dogs coming from a shelter situation do. If I were going to adopt him I think I would invest in an X Pen and leave him in that while I was gone. Leave plenty of toys and things to snuggle with while you are gone. I wouldn't allow your work schedule to deter you from adopting any dog.
