X-husband just bought his 2nd Boxer pup. (1st one died of Parvo within 2 wks of getting him, no it wasn't covered and yes he changed breeders :)).
Okay, he took dog to vet and got the 2nd set of shots, puppy was doing well. He is around 3mths old I think he said. Very healthy.
Took dog for the 3rd set of shots and within 2 days the dog couldn't walk. He said it was like he was paralyzed in his hips. He called the vet and they told him, it wasn't side effects from the vaccinations. 2 days later, dog is even worse. He took him in and they did x-rays and blood work, all came back good, they seem clueless as to what is causing this.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this or experienced this?
If you're not very careful, you can hit a nerve in the leg, and have this happen.Where did your pup have the shots? My advice is to seek the opinion of a neurologist. I have heard of it happening plenty of times, and I feel fortunate not to have experienced this with my dogs. I hope it will slowly improve, which it should do. Good luck with your baby.
I also thought maybe he was just sore, but he can't even hardly walk. You would think it must have something to do with the vaccinations, wouldn't you. Considering he was fine and 2 days later he is crippled???? Puzzling to say the least.
My friend posted the original question/concern about the boxer and his vaccines. They now do not know what is causing his problem. They think it has to do with his joints in his front legs. We took him back to the vet this morning after he started getting worse again. He also had a fever. He did so much better for about a day after they pumped him full of fluids and electrolytes. They are now going to keep him and do a steroidal treatment and antibiotics. Any ideas?
Thanks for the responses. The vet is pretty confident that the diagnosis is hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD). He is still not doing good and was at the vet's clinic all weekend so he could stay confined and be watched. The vet is taking a set of x-rays that he took of his front legs over the weekend to a specialist this afternoon. He is going to call me tomorrow to let me know if the specialist concurs with his diagnosis or if they have come up with something else. His spirits seem better since he is home. I am just praying that this passes and he is all better very soon. Thanks!
