Hi, we have a labrador bitch of 3 years that had pups 8 weeks ago, she has stopped eating her normal food and for the last 3 weeks has eaten very little of anything. Her adbomen is swollen with fluid which has been analysed by the vet with no real answers, she had a laparotomy on monday and 1.5 litres of fluid was removed from her abdomen, all other organs were deemed normal in appearance and she is on prednisilone, maxalon and antibiotics by mouth. She was sedated yesterday and dye was put into her bladder to see if it was leaking as abdominal fluid showed uro-peritoneal fluid, bladder was also blown up with air, this showed bladder intact, vet at loss as to why she is filling up with fluid, heart is normal size. Does anyone have any ideas as we are £700 down and no closer to a cure, she will pick at cheese and sausage but taking very little food in ......your help would be appreciated..many thanks...Lori and Drew
I don't know how to help with the fluid and air problem, but as far as the eating, my bitch goes through that also. She nibbles her dry food, and doesn't eat much. What I found, that worked wonders is, I mix 2 cups of her normal dry with 1/2 a bottle of vanilla insure(buy generic its cheaper), A tablespoon of canned pumkin, and 2 table spoons of vanilla yogurt. She doesn't eat it all right away, but I have not had a problem with it spoiling. she does eat it by morning. If you want, try a small amount, or make a mixure of a whole bottle of insure and a tablespoon of vanilla yogurt, and try to give it twice a day. It will help with both her ability to continue making milk for the puppies, and give her nutriants. Maybe if she gets somthing in her stomach she won't have the other fluid. I wish you the best of luck, and let use know how she is doing.
