Sonnie is a 2yr old mini Dachshund (I recently adopted him). Two weeks ago he suffered from an abcessed anal gland, I took him to work, he was sedated and the gland was lanced. Sonnie came home on Baytril, and Deramaxx. Last night I noticed him acting weird again. He almost seemed like a "back" dog to me. He was backing into the corner and very humped up with his tail tucked. When I went to examine him he did fine until I hit the anus. He turned into Mr.Killer and decided he did not want me back there. So back to work he went again, he was not fully impacked but did need expressing. It has only been 2 weeks! While I could express him myself, I don't want to do so every 2 weeks. So I am greatly considering the surgery. I have seen it done a number of times, but unfortunately for me lol I don't get to see the "go home" result. What is it like? Is it worth it? Right now he is on 3 days worth of metacam to help him relax because he is quite painful. I also restarted to Baytril in hopes of warding off infection in an unhealed gland. *sigh* so if anyone has any personal experience and advice to give I am all ears. Thanks guys!!!
Sorry to hear about your doxie, I know how painful it can be for these poor dogs. I responded to your earlier post and told you about my male minpin. When he had his first episode with the abscessed and impacted anal gland, after it was lanced and expressed he was put on a full three week course of antibiotics. I think he was given clavimox, but I'm not sure since this was almost 6 years ago. It sounds to me like your doxie's infection hadn't completely cleared up before he went off the standard 10-day antibiotic treatment.
I don't know anyone who has had the surgery to remove the anal glands done, but (JMO) think you might be a bit premature in deciding to go ahead with it. Good luck to both you and your doxie. I'm sure you'll make the decision you feel is right for him.
