my Maltese puppy has been on a strict ultra allergen free z/d diet for about a year and a half. She was started on it by one of the many vets we saw for her GI illness (blood/mucus). She has done very well, and all symptoms have resolved on the diet.
The problem is that the wet food is made of a "sticky" consistency and she is unable to eat it on her own. She weighs about 3 pounds and has a tiny tongue, so she can't manage it.
So I have been HAND FEEDING her this entire time. Over the last few months I have introduced other foods in small quantities, like cooked chicken, cheerios and she can eat that on her own from a bowl.
I just can't see myself hand feeding her for the next 20 years (knock on wood) it's becoming too much.
Does anyone here use the wet z/d diet? How does your puppy eat it? Initially I was mixing it with yogurt, so it was easier to lap up, but it made her stools too loose, and it took her too long to eat a small amount, and she would just walk away.
Does anyone use the dry z/d diet? Would that be better? Is it small bites? she can only manage dry food that is for small bites.
I don't have to feed that diet (thank goodness), but have you addressed this w/ your vet? Have you talked to her breeder? Have you checked out any Maltese or toy breed forums, you might have more luck there?
