Hello all I have rescued a 6 year old chihuahua and she was from a puppy mill and is a real nice long haired girl. Trouble is she has so few teeth she cannot eat hard kibble and I always have heard that a diet of soft food is not that healthy for her or her tarter on the teeth. She also is not house broken and if anyone has tips I would appreciate them very much. Thank you
She doesn't have many teeth, so I wouldn't worry. A good diet like merrick or Innova, etc. is just fine. She will probably lose the rest of her teeth in the next couple of years anyway. Chi's are known for really bad teeth.
As far as housebreaking, go back to puppy hood. Watch her like you would a new puppy, and praise her when she goes out side.
Good luck and I am sure she will give you plenty of good happy years.
I put a little warm water in our Chi's kibble and stir it to make a little sauce. She loves it, and it also softens the food some. I don't think it would hurt to mix a little wet food in with the dry to soften it up - plus, she'll probably like it.
House-breaking - we rescued our 1 year old just prior to Christmas. She wasn't too bad, but she's gotten much better. We keep her in a crate at night, with wee pad in the crate w/ her bed at the other end. She goes on the wee pad sometimes, but she's gotten real good at telling us she has to go out. We take her out about one hour after she eats. She now has a routine in the a.m. and evening. Number one and number two!!
In the beginning, I gave her a Yum Yum - after she went outside and did her business. She got to know the phrase Yum Yum real fast!! It was the incentive to go outside.
