Just found out today that my 13 yr old cat has hyperthyroidism. After all the tears, I asked the questions to my trusted and loved veterinarian.
As sick as she is, there is hope. For those out there in my situation but with their cat, please hang in there. There are three main treatment options for this condition. There is no wrong choice. If you don't choose to have your cat treated, please know that they will likely suffer a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which will then lead to heart failure & death.
For my cat's comfort I have chosen to medicate her daily here at home. I chose the less invasive, less traumatic, and most compassionate treatment for my senior cat. I also know that if the pills don't work or become toxic to her, there is a cream available.
Foster & Smith has a great pet education site. I downloaded a very good article regarding this condition. Knowing what I know now, I was able to make the right choice for my cat.
My friend's 8 year old Siamese just received the same diagnosis. She was going to do the pills but it is so difficult to give Meeze pills every day that she decided to take her for the radioactive iodine treatment instead. She was supposed to go this past week but then her vet wanted to run one more set of blood tests just to confirm and now she has to wait until April to get another appointment at the Radiocat place. It's a special treatment center just for feline hyperthyroidism and fortunately we have one right here in CT. Their website, www.radiocat.com has a lot of helpful information about the condition too so their website may help you as well. Apparently it's strangely common in New England and may be related to something environmental.

Yes, that was one of the options we were given. However, we felt that with her age, it would be too traumatic for her. We started her on the pills this past Friday. I pop the pill in a pill pocket and she takes it like a treat. Those pill pockets are wonderful and I can switch it up a little because they have them in chicken and salmon flavors. Thanks for the website and the info. Much appreciated!
