I have been looking for a puppy but cannot decide on what to have.I know it must be small because the lease states so but I wanted to know which small breeds are best around children.I have a two year old daughter and I want her to be able to have the joy of a puppy around but I dont want to put a puppy at danger with her.Any suggestions?
Go with a larger Toy breed like a Pug or Shih Tzu. Look into some of the smaller terrier breeds like Border Terriers or Cairns. What about a Mini Schnauzer, Bichon Frise or Boston Terrier? Of course there are Beagles. Your best bet, IMO, is to go to the pound and choose a small dog that you and your daughter click with. Our first family dog was a Schnauzer mix from our local pound and he's a great dog. He adores kids! My grandmother adopted a very sweet small mixed breed from the shelter a few months before she passed away. He now lives with my aunt and is a great comfort to her and her family.
I would go with either a french bulldog or pug. They are very uninclined to bite even as puppys. A beagle might be a little extreme for a small child because of all the energy. you could go with a puggle, which i find very cute.
Thanks so much for the replies surprisingly i looked on a website and found a small mixed breed dog not far from me.His name is Buddy.I have it set up to meet him on Monday.Hopefully it all works out!!
Pawsies crossed that it works out on Monday!! Please remember that even if your kids and dogs are normally well behaved that they do need supervision and training about how to interact with each other.
If you are in an apartment, my primary suggestion would be to stick with small breeds that were bred to be ornamental companions (e.g. bichon, lhasa) and stay away from breeds (and mixes of breeds) that were bred to hunt (e.g. beagles, jack russell).
Well good luck with the meeting, I hope it goes well!!!!
If it doesn't everyones suggestions seem like great ideas, altho I would stay away from dogs with long hair, they may be soft, but its more appealing to a child to pull on and not so appealing to the dog

I had a lhasa apso when I was very young. I also have mini dachshunds with very young kids. I don't beleive it's a breed thing. It's an education thing. The kids and dog have tolearn to live together. I also have a chi with my kids.
