Hi everyone! I had a question, there is a lady in Southern California that claims to be a miniature aussie breeder, and claims to have a puppy for sale that is a blue tri in color (yes I said blue tri, not blue merle) and is selling the puppy for $3,500, saying it is very rare! I've never heard of that color, or cannot find it anywhere online. Is it true?
Yes it is rare becuase it is unwanted. The blue bi is a black bi who has the delute gene. Does this puppy still have it's tail? Alot of people have blue merles who only have merling on their tail, when the tail is docked and the merling is gone, they try to sell the dog for a high price. It is rip off.
The correct term is a cryptic or phantom blue merle. Most often solid blue dogs carry the merle gene. I had a full sized aussie that was that way. Often they are so dark blue as an adult most people think they are black. The lighter blue ones tend to get merling spots as they get older.
Health should be most importand, and to this breeder it doesn't sound like she cares. If you are interesed in a mini aussie, go to someone who tests for hips and eyes. also DNA's for PRA, thyroid and MDR-1. That is were the well spent money for a pup will be. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line. I will be happy to anwser your questions about the breed.
Thanks for the reply! No, I am not interested at all in this dog. A very good friend of mine has a pair of registered and tested mini aussies that are in perfect shape and very healthy that just had a litter, and she is giving me a great deal on a beautiful and very healthy red merle female puppy! I just happened to see an ad for this particular so called "rare blue tri", and I have had some experience with aussies (I just lost mine a year ago from old age, he was 16) and I never heard of this color, so I thought something was a little fishy, lol. I just wanted to get a professional's opinion. The tail is docked, and she claims to have papers on the puppy. The picture of the puppy just looks like a light black tri (diluted) with brown points, and no color of merle at all, and the eyes are brown. Thanks for your help!
