Theyd' eventually lower the price on the dogs more and more until they were so cheap someone would buy them. After a while everyone has pity on the dogs. If no one bought them, I'm not sure what the store would do with them. Give them away I guess, though I can never see that happening. I wish all petstores would go the route of Petsmart and work with the local humane society to adopt out pets instead of getting mill dogs.
A lot of them will take them to the shelter. Usually late at night and drop them off in the night deposit cages. They will tell them that they are strays so they don't have to pay the drop off fee and they don't have to tell them they came from the petstore. Others I'm not sure what happens to them. Some I would think would start to show their hip problems and other genictic problems that they probably just put them down, or they let the shelter do it so again they don't have to spend anymore money on them.
I don't know what they would do with them. But I was at the petstore buying bones for Brock twice this month and they had puppies for sale. I would never buy one there but do feel bad for the poor things. They have some that have been there for a long time and I can't believe the prices for mixed breeds. I finally confronted the store on Sat. I asked them were they got the puppies. They said from reputable (sp) breeders. I laughed and said I find that hard to believe and then when you ask $800-$1500 for these poor puppies. you will never sell them and you just promote byb's. They were not impressed and neither was I. So I will be finding a new pet store to shop at for my supplies.
yeah i wouldnt buy one from there but i went in the petshop and they had to wems that were so cute and i felt so bad and then they had a sick kitten in the cage that was dehydrated badly and i told them and they said it wasent
Unfortunately, there are still plenty of people that buy from the Pet Shops. I have known several people that have bought their dog from a Pet Shop. They seem to be blind and don't want to listen to where there animal comes from and why it is not a good idea to buy from them.
it is true that a lot of people are uneducated about dogs and will buy puppies from petstores as impulse buys. they are all very cute and look so lonely and people just can't resist. at pj's pets here in toronto they reduce the prices as the pups get older untill they are sold. i know a lady who worked there at the time i rescued my baby and quit about a week later. i had spoken with her when i was in the store and she called after she had resigned and told me that if a pup shows signs of illness they will still try and sell them to unknowing people. if the illness is to prnounced then they are either be euthanized or taken to the livestock managers home where she has OVER 30 DOGS!! (it wouldn't suprise me if she was breeding them too) also, they apparently all live in crates. they do this and if the dog begins to appear to be healthy- it is back to the store where they try and sell it as a 'normal pup'. apparently my little doggy spent some time at this womans house. poor thing!
When people buy from petshops, they more than likely are buying from the Hunte Corp. Largest puppymill in the world. How sad. Only buy from a breeder you know. If you do this, there won't be any ..leftover.. puppies. Until then, alot of puppies are rescued and put into foster homes until they find permanent homes, some never have a chance and are gassed to death. It's very sad..
i went to a petshop to get sothing and there set the pups so sad had poop on there face and not playing at all my god how can people take a puppy and not take of it made me so sick i got home and cryed for the little angels bella
I used to work at a pet store...when I was very young. Honestly...I can tell you exactly what pet stores do. Sometimes they lower their prices until the pups are purchased but if the pups get too old they will either try to sell the pups to other stores/markets and such or they will put the pups down. As sad as that is and as cruel as that sounds, honestly...I'm speaking from experience. I only worked at the pet store for about a month and I never harmed a pup or anything...I was just there to clean up the cages and feed the dogs and such...but I saw and heard them...they take the pup to a local vet and have it put to sleep or they do it in their back room on the table. Sometimes they will take them to a shelter but most of the shelters around me won't take them because they are full.
The Pet Stores sell these puppies to bring people into their stores. Once their kids go I want, they buy. As already mentioned people buy the puppies on a whim and then regret when they start having problems.
Ok, first of all, stop saying all petstores are bad....that is NOT true at all. i myself work at a petstore, i take care of the puppies and kittens and rodents. and i will honestly tell you, they keep me pretty busy. im always checking trays to make sure their clean, they get fresh water in the morning, afternoon, and night. they are never dirty, i know this for a fact, because i spend the day making sure their clean and healthy. and about not caring for puppies health, again not all petstores are like that. one of our puppies wasn't as active as normal, the owners immediately took him to the vet...turned out he was just overheated. they all get exercise, they have run of the store for 2 hours in the morning, and 2 hours at night, plus they get out during the day. and as the puppies get older and they're not being bought we do reduce the price...but that doesn't mean we just sell the pup to anyone. the owner refused to sell one of the puppies the other day to someone because of a gut instict he had had. our pups do not go to the spca, we always find home for them. the boss has taken a couple home, or given some to good homes for free (when he sends them for free he interviews the people first at their home, and makes sure their alright first) i will honestly tell you not all petstores are bad. you will not walk into our store and see a puppy or kitten covered in poop. nails are done regularly, brushed often, always clean fresh water, always taken care of, they get exercised...and we don't just send the pup or kitten home to anyone just for a sale. we take the time to talk to potential moms and dads.
Tj: Of course there are always exceptions. I am sure no one was out to offend you. I am glad that you take such good care of the animals, that is great to hear! but: You cannot argue that they are not harder to house train. They have been forced to potty/sleep/play in the same area most of the time. Even if you are fast to clean up their messes, they are still going in there sleep area. Do you know where your puppies are coming from. In my opinion NO responsible breeder is going to sell there puppies to a petstore. In my opinion selling puppies to a petstore is just asking puppy mills to keep producing puppies that are not bred to standard, and are not trying to breed health problems out of the dogs. Plus they are being sold at unbelievable prices. Would you ever go to a puppy mill and buy a puppy? Once again i would like to stress that I am not saying that your petstore is bad. I hope you keep on taking as good of care of the animals as you can. I would just NEVER buy my puppy from a petstore.
There are petstores out there that takes good care of the puppies, but they still will sell a pup to anyone who has the money. As a breeder of the puppies you don't know where they are going. You don't know if they are in the shelter on death roll, abused, neglected, you just don't know. That's the main reason why responsible breeder don't sell their pups to Petstores.
I won't even buy ANYTHING from a pet store that sells dogs or cats--- DON'T patronize these places and let them know why you are not buying from them. Discourage anyone you see from buying from such places. Why can't people all be as smart as us?????
"Why can't people all be as smart as us?????" Some people just don't know about puppy mills & BYB's. I know I didn't, and I bought Ace from a pet store in the beginning of June. He has not had any health problems yet, knock on wood. I treat him as if I bought him from the best breeder in the world, he is currently taking puppy classes every thursday night and he is very happy. After coming to this board, though, and learning about where these puppies come from I can say that I would never get another puppy from a pet store, but i am glad that I got Ace.
My family and I almost bought a pup frum a pet store. luckily a women talked us out of it . I felt so bad though because i knew that the puppy could end up in a bad place. we ended up getting a pup from a reputable breeder. Im really happy that we did what we did
